So I’m trying to decide if I should get my male rabbit neutered. I’m really nervous as I read that a lot of bunnies die while getting neutered. I love my bun so much and cannot bear the thought of losing him! What should I do??

I am not sure where you read that a lot of bunnies die while getting neutered but that is absolutely not true. As with any surgery there are risks but most bunnies actually make it through neutering and even spay surgeries, which clearly is more invasive. You want to make sure that you are using a rabbit savvy vet that has done a lot of them and has a very low loss ratio. I personally had two rabbits neutered and one spayed in a year time frame and they all did extremely well.

If you browse any online forum or place people can freely post, you will almost always find most people saying their rabbit did not make it through a neuter; however, keep in mind that people are more likely to post when things go wrong than right.

There’s also what’s called the availability heuristic, meaning that the more vivid and readily-remembered something is, the more frequent we believe it will be. The stories of people’s rabbits dying during a neuter are very vivid– so sad, heartbreaking, and unfortunate. As a result, one may overestimate how often that actually happens overall though.

I think the two main factors to consider is the vet’s experience with neutering and caring for rabbits, as well as your rabbit’s health. If both are well, the risk is minimal!
