Bugs &Ruby Hey guys! My sweet girl Ruby, she’s nearly 8! We’ve noticed that shes been a) losing weight and b) kind of like dragging her hind end. Today I noticed two incidents of her just leaving her foot across a ledge because she couldn’t put them down. Ive heard this is common is older rabitts. Im going to beef up her food and put oil in it everyday. Im going to try and seperate them during their pellet time because I dont want my mini rex getting that oil i dont think it’ll do anything, but hes had two bouts of stasis. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Have you been to a rabbit savvy vet for an exam? They would tell you the proper diet for the age.

I know this section is for buns who have gone over the rainbow bridge so hopefully someone can move it to a different section since a good amount of members don’t read the posts on here as it saddens us all, so this post can be seen

If she’s dragging her hind end, she needs a vet.

I moved your post to the diet and care-section.

8 years is not so old that unexplained weight loss and dragging the hind end can be considered a normal effect of ageing. You should take your bun to a vet. Hind end weakness is often associated with e cuniculi, a condition that can be treated with fenbendazole and symptom-relieving drugs such as meloxicam. E cuniculi could also explain the weight loss.

If your girl’s hind end weakness should prove to be due to osteoarthritis, there are meds that can help control this. Many elderbuns are medicated with a low dose of melixicam, an anti inflammatory pain killer.

Oil is not good for rabbits, their digestive system is adapted to a low cal high-fiber diet. Oil could potentially result in GI upset.

I hope you can find some good solutions for your bun, we’d be grateful for updates.
