We recently rescued an abandoned bun. I took it to the vet to make sure everything was ok. We didn’t know how long it had been outside, how old, or whether it was a  male or female. Turns out the new addition was not so keen on the car ride and was very stressed when we got there. she/he whimpered the whole time we were there . The  vet checked out as much as she could without being too invasive and determined that the stray bun was most likely female around 2 or 3 years old.

I got her home and we very carefully introduced her to Pickle our definitely male bunny. They played and chased each other around for a while, but it wasn’t long before Pickle tried to mount the new bun (like i said we were very careful with them so as not to make more bunnies that we can handle!)

We reintroduced them a couple days later and again they seemed to get along quite well only this time it was the other bunny that full on mounted Pickle… Poor little guy didn’t know what was going on!

so I guess I’m just wondering how common it is for females to mount males? Is it  just a dominance thing or is the previously she bunny actually a he bunny??

Mounting is no way to determine gender- even female bunnies will mount.

          Is Pickle neutered?

We keep them completely seprate, and he going in next week to get snipped. They have only met a couple times and each time has been with him on a leash in case he starts to look like he is getting frisky we can seprate them before he gets into trouble!

Little concerned the vets verdict was “most likely female” How experienced if your vet with rabbits? Also, if female, did they investigate if she may already be pregnant? By rescued – did you mean found her abondoned and brought her home? Because she could have already spent time with other male rabbits or dumped because she was pregnant. Thank you for rescuing by the way!

she was hanging around outside and was obviously NOT wild! One of my main concerns was that she may have been pregnant which is another reason I took her to the vet as soon as i could. The problem was that after the car ride she ended up getting very very skittish and would not let us pick her up. when we tried she started kicking and freaking out. her heart rate was way above where it should have been so the vet decided it was too much for her. she got through the majority of the exam though. the verdict was that she may have had a litter previously but her tummy was not big enough in comparison to the size of her nipples (which is the 95% female) to be pregnant. but she didn’t actually get a chance to view the goods. The trying to hump just threw me off :s

It’s probably best not to do any bonding until both rabbits have been altered.

The male can still impregnate the female for up to 30 days after his neuter.

Also it sounds like the poor female needs to be spayed as she is having some hormonal issues…

aww poor bun. The fact that females hump came as quite a surprise when our mounted my bf’s arm! We can’t lay in bed with our arms in a ‘provacative’ manner or she gets all excited! The bf is now convinced she it a male and walks around calling her “IT”. =[ Good luck with the new one!

animals mount regardless the gender…. dogs too female mounts female males the same thing… and yes bunnies fit that category too

have seen a veeeery dominant female mount a neutered male b4 too.

                      It is a dominance thing.

lol good to know. We can safely choose a name for HER now! I’m excited to start bonding them next month. the couple times they’ve met seemed to go smoothly enough, but they haven’t spent enough time together to know for sure. Fingers crossed all goes well
