So these are pictures of my rabbit’s nose.

In early Nov he got a sore on his nose that grew larger, we took him to the vet who prescribed an antibiotic cream for contact dermatitis and gave him a shot for mites. He then gave him 3 additional shots, spaced 2 weeks apart and nothing helped. We were putting the cream on 2 x  a day. At the end of the initial 2 months (end of Dec/begin Jan) we took him back in and the sore was not  better, in fact it was worse, so the vet gave him a steroid shot and a shot of antibiotics. Our bunny is a 100% house solo bunny. He eats a diet of hay/rabbit pellets and loves cilantro, parsley and mint, but will eat a variety of veggies. His appetite is great, his attitude is very poor, but we put that down to his sore nose.

He is 8 months now but about 5.5 months old when this started and he was neutered at 3 months. I clean his cage and litter box every two days, he get fresh food and water daily. He is allowed out of his cage and lives in our sun room where there is no access to anything toxic, chemical or otherwise.

I am not sure what to do next. Any suggestions for what will likely be a new vet!  I appreciate any help and ideas. It is only this area that is affected, it did get smaller with the antibiotic but is now coming back with avengence. Thanks in advance

Wow, that looks pretty nasty. Did the vet test for anything, any parasites? I really don’t know. Is there a specialist the vet can refer you to?

He is going to take a sample and send it off next time I go in but was curious if this was something so unique to our bunny that I should expect it to take months to figure out, or if anyone had experienced the same thing before us and could throw some ideas out?

Poor guy. Maybe rabbit syphllis…but not certain. Let us know what the vet says.

I am really hoping it is something else. He has had no contact with other rabbits since 10 weeks old, he didn’t get the sores until he was almost 5.5months, if it was syphilis wouldn’t it have shown sooner?

Rabbits can get growths caused by viruses. Much like we can get warts. It can be transferred to them via insects. A test of the tissue seems to be the best move.

So it took a couple of weeks, and one skin analysis later, he has a precancerous nose lesion. Which is so weird as he is black, only 8 months old and never in direct sun. The vet has no clue how this would happen in a bunny so young. He does think that it started as a bacterial infection that has moved into precancerous tissue. He is treating him with antibiotic shots, silver to cauterize the sore and monistat 7 twice a day to combat any fungal infection there might be. GaryBunny is eating limited amounts of food and water right now and we are hoping that this will help him perk up.

I will update more as I get it. The next shot is scheduled for next Friday. Poor Gary Bunny….

I’m sorry to hear what it is, but am glad you have gotten a more accurate diagnosis. This way he can be treated for the real cause, which is the best for getting it under control.
                          Sending healing vibes:

Oh dear! Poor little guy. But as RabbitPam said at least now they know what it is, can treat it correctly and he should be fine soon. (((((((((((((((((GaryBunny)))))))))))))))))

Devastating day, Gary Bunny didn’t make it. Late yesterday he totally stopped eating, I was going to take him in this morning but he was already dead when we opened his cage at 7.30 am. I guess it took too long to diagnose.

If anyone finds this thread because their rabbit has a sore on it’s nose, please consider asking the vet to just scrape it immediately. That way it’s clear how to treat. First our vet tried a series of shots for mites, then he tried steroids and antibiotics for bacteria. Then we took him to a new vet who did the scrape and it came back precancerous. Of course my Gary was very young and black, not common for this dx. so all the more reason to just pay the $97 for the scrape test. I wish I had done this in November when he first got sick but they convinced me it wasn’t necessary. I have had a vet appointment every few weeks since that time and it still ended up with Gary dying waaaaaay before he should have. I am very sad today, I feel like I failed my little rabbit.

I am so sorry to hear you lost your little Gary Bunny. : ( Please accept my condolences.
You certainly have not failed the little guy. From what you have shared, you have given him a great home. You sought vet care when it was needed and followed their guidance. Really, what any of us would have done also. It might never be clear what has taken Gary Bunny but it is very clear you cared for him greatly.
