Bailey went bunny dating today (yay!), and it seems like she and I have decided on one.  He’s such an adorable little guy!  He was a stray, and had a broken leg that was starting to heal when he was rescued.  I felt where the break was, and it’s in the bone that’s above the foot, kind of where the leg attaches to the body.  I can’t seem to find info on how broken legs might affect a bunny’s future- I was wondering if he might have an increased chance of getting arthritis or other health issues later in life, and whether I’ll need to take any extra precautions with him.  His leg is a little crooked- turned in, I think- but the leg is healed and he hops around without any trouble.  Anyone ideas/experiences?

Just to note- I’m also planning on having my vet examine him if (more like when! ) we adopt him, just to get her opinion, too.

It’s certainly possible about the arthritis and other health issues, but that would be the case with many rabbits with or without a broken leg.

I hope it works out for Bailey and this bunny. I imagine having a companion will help him (and Bailey too).

Kokanee&Kahlua (one of the forum leaders) has a rabbit with a crooked leg. I’m not certain whether from a break or not. One of the things she has mentioned is making sure flooring had some had some cushioning effect. As he’s a bigger bunny and she wanted to reduce stress on his leg while he’s moving about in normal bunny fashion. So that may be something to consider. Also, you might want to use ramps up to higher places to limit him jumping to them or down from them. Though your vet may want to encourage jumping to keep the leg strengthened. Something to ask about?

Sounds like he’s very much coming home with you. Congratulations!

I think he would be very lucky to have you and a new bunny bride to come home to. It is possible that he will be more sensitive to issues later on, but a low fronted litter pan, ramps as were mentioned, and regular straight running exercise might be helpful in keeping him from pressuring the injury while strengthening his overall health. If they seem to really like each other, then he would be spared the trials of a difficult bond. However, no high places for him. Bonding activities would be safer on the floor I imagine. Good idea to take him to the vet first.

It sure does look like he’s coming home with us- I bought all of his supplies today, including easy-access litterboxes so he can get in and out easily.  The cushy flooring is a good idea- I hadn’t thought of that!  There is carpet everywhere Bailey has access to, but I have a cushion I can put in his area so he has an even softer place to hang out.  His setup will be a cage attached to an expen, at least to start out with, so he won’t need to climb up and down at all.  Thanks for the advice!  I’ll be sure to post updates

Here’s a sneak peak!  As long as he doesn’t get adopted in the next 5 days (I can’t pick him up until Saturday, sadly), and that he and Bailey get along on our next visit, this is the new boy

He’s so cute! He looks so cuddly and soft with just a hint of disapproval.

What a cutie! Good luck with him.

I have a little girl bun who broke her leg almost 3 yrs ago. It did heal a bit bent but doesnt give her any trouble really.

Sometimes when its really cold and damp I can see she’ll babay it , or if shes been too rambunctious, but its very rare.

She’s still as crazy as she was before with her climbing and jumping there is just no stopping her!!! Will she have problems later on , no one can really say for sure!

My Arduina broke her leg when she was about 3mos old (never use a harness!) and the vet did an amazing job, we can’t even tell which leg it was now (no limp whatsoever).  They did have to put a pin in and its still there (so I need to check it regularly).  But she is just as rambunctious as before, maybe more so.  Three weeks after her surgery, she cleared a 2ft high gate!!   (I was supposed to keep her still for 6weeks).

So I’m sure even with a limp your new bun will be able to get around and have a really good time with his new sweetie.  He may have some issues later on in life, but who doesnt’?

Congratulations on the newest addition to your family!  And to the breeze of bonding!

It is so nice to hear people taking in rescue buns, especially ones with disabilities.  Thank you.
