How were bunny fur names thought of?

There are some ones that I wonder where the name originated. Like himalayan, sable point, black otter (i think of an actual otter sometimes), etc

Mmm…don’t know. I guess some of it transferred over from other animals fur names. But then how did those animals get those names? Some of it is to do with the region the fur type or breed was first bred. Himi is a breed as well as a colouring but I think that it’s named for the region it originated – himalayan mountains.

Bun says her fur color, Himalayan means “pretty like the mountains.” I am pretty sure she is lying and full of herself….Just ignore her for now until someone who isn’t stuck up like her tells you a real answer :p

I think it’s interesting that himalayan bunnies and cats are light colored with darker points. I wonder if the bunny color was named after the cat color? Or visa versa? Or something?

Harlequin makes sense to me, because the “correct” coloring gives them a very distinct checkerboard pattern, just like a harlequin clown or something. But I’ve only seen the “correct” coloring in pictures of the actual harlequin breed – usually they just look like tiger bunnies (what my husband calls them, haha). Though I have no idea why the two harli colors are Japanese (maybe they developed it in Japan?) and magpie (no clue on that one).

And I imagine the chinchilla family of colors is named because it looks like chinchilla fur, but no idea where the original name came from.

The otters have always confused me! Lol They look nothing like any actual otters I’ve seen, so I can’t even guess why they’re called that. Maybe somebody somewhere thought they looked like an otter.
