Funny Smelling Oxbow Pellets?

 Has anyone noticed a different smell to oxbow pellets recently? I just bought a big bag from the local rabbit rescue, and the pellets don’t smell like they usually do.  They smell almost like critical care does, kind of a sweet apple-ish smell.  None of my bunnies will eat them because they smell different than normal (except for one that is pellet obsessed…..) so 1 out of 8 means that there is definitely something different about them…has anyone else experienced this?

Do you still have the packaging information to email Oxbow – I think there is a batch control and stuff on those big bags.

I would contact Oxbow tomorrow.  I emailed them once about a dried kernel of corn I found in a 10lb bag- and I thought it was weird since there is NO CORN in their pellets.  And I got this reply from them.  I was not asking for a new bag- just curious about the single kernel  of corn.  They have always seemed very prompt in answering questions.  But I think your rabbits are telling you something- so I would contact Oxbow before offering anymore from that bag.

 

 

Thank you for contacting Oxbow with your question about the Bunny Basics T. You are correct that we do not use corn as an ingredient in our Bunny Basics T or any of our other products. While finding corn or other foreign matter in our pellets is rare it does happen. Occasionally the mill that manufactures our pellets does use corn in some of their other products. While they have an excellent clean out process before our pellets are run, sometimes a kernel of corn will be in their system and end up in our products. We are currently working with our manufacturer to try and eliminate the possibility of finding corn in our pellets.

I just bought a bag last week and I didn’t notice a different smell and the buns are eating them just fine. I wonder if different batches maybe go to different regions?

I just spoke with the new Oxbow quality control manager. He is really nice, and he actually worked at the facility that produces the pellets! He told me all about how they are made, and sometimes the smell of the pellets changes based on the tye of hay they get in. I explained the issue and they are replacing my whole 50 lb. bag! They also asked that I donate the other pellets to the rabbit rescue – I think there isn’t a concern that the pellets are bad. He said the pellets may have been put in a plastic bin that had a flavored substance in them, such as critical care or something.

Anyways, I almost feel bad that they are replacing the bag, I hope that there really was some kind of funny smell to the pellets or else he’ll think I’m crazy…

I wouldn’t feel badly Moo, especially since you are going to get fresh pellets which you need, but also a free bag of pellets is being donated to a rescue. That wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

That is great! This makes me feel very confident in my choice of Oxbow products. It’s worth it to me to pay a little bit more and get the great customer service and know that if something is not up to your standards, it will be taken care of.

I got my 50lb box of Orchard hay a few weeks ago and I’m in HEAVEN. I LOVE IT! I’ve barely gone thru the top “pancake” of hay and I am DELIRIOUS about the amount of money I’m saving! AND my closet smells like Orchard hay! I love that smell! Yummy!

Yes – they definitely have great customer service. The lady I spoke with was really nice and she even adopted a bunny from the same rescue that I volunteered at in California! She remembered the name of the president of our rescue, and knew just what group I was talking about, so they are really caring of their customer.
