my friend (who has an african grey parrot) sent me this email:

        Subject: tee hee–from THE RECORD

TOKYO – When Yosuke the parrot flew out of his cage and got lost, he did exactly what he had been taught – recite his name and address to a stranger willing to help.

Police rescued the African grey parrot two weeks ago from a neighbor’s roof in the city of Nagareyama, near Tokyo. Police say after spending a night at the station, he was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital while police searched for clues.

He kept mum with the cops, but began chatting after a few days with the vet.

Police say the bird eventually identified himself as “Mr. Yosuke Nakamura.”

The parrot also provided his full home address, down to the street number, and even entertained the hospital staff by singing songs.

“We checked the address, and what do you know, a Nakamura family really lived there. So we told them we’ve found Yosuke,” Uemura said.

The Nakamura family told police they had been teaching the bird its name and address for about two years.

But Yosuke apparently wasn’t keen on opening up to police officials.

“I tried to be friendly and talked to him, but he completely ignored me,” Uemura said.

This was posted on my bird boards. . . . I think I might try to teach Peppers my full name and maybe my phone number. I don’t want him learning my current address though because it won’t always be the same. . .

my friend’s parrot knows her name is pippa.  don’t think she knows her last name which is probably good because my friend went from her married name back to her maiden name since she has had pippa.  pippa also knows funny things like ‘boop boop e doop’ ‘step up pippa’  can imitate the phone ringing, cats meowing, trucks backing up and can whistle the tune for the andy griffith show.    whenever i’m there for a visit or dinner pippa tweats happily in the background sometimes making giggling noises.  too cute!

My friends African grey can imitate the phone, yell shut up stupid to the other parrots, bark like 3 of her dogs and best of all can imitate her response to hot gossip… wow, wow, wow…. and her “Ha” as she wins a round of cards.

You guys are really tempting me into getting a parrot….
I think, like buns, they have a lot more personality than what most people think.

My parrots can do the “Nextel beep” and the microwave beeps.  My Red Bellied (pet parrot) says “Peek-a-boo” whenever I towel dry him off after his bath.  His previous owner must have taught him this.  He also knew ”Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty”, “Meow”, “Pretty Bird”, “Hi Cricket” “Purr” and he learned his new name within 3 days “Hey Kirb”.  (I don’t know what his previous name was- could have been Cricket or Cricket could have been the cat??? not sure.

The breeding pairs that I got from someone else are a hoot too…  Jahazi- the male african grey yells “Hey Larry” everyone once in a while (previous owners dad).  They make space type noises and assorted beeps.  And sometimes they whistle songs- nothing I recognize but they are obviously entertained by it!  My husband will whistle back and forth with the birds from different parts of the house.  He tries to get them to change to the pattern he is whistling- sometimes they do- but somtimes he gives in and switches to imitate them.

I had told my husband to NEVER teach Kirby the “wolf whistle”/construction worker whistle-  and within 2 days of getting the 2 pairs of Senegals and 1 pair of African Grey Timnehs- Kirby whistled it.   My poor baby boy- corrupted!

And one of the Senegals, Tuku- loves to say “Pretty Bird” followed up by his “evil laugh”.

I have never raised and kept a bird from a baby- so all the ones that I have gotten already knew how to speak and some of their naughty behaviors.

Kirby bonded to me and views my husand as “the competition”- Kirby does a cute little courting dance to try to woo me- but the second my husband is in the vicinity it stops.  He has only been able to see it on phone video and he can hear it over the phone.  He has tried to sneak up and see it in person- but Kirby is too smart for that.
