HEllo all! So when I adopted Emmitt ( about a week ago) his fur was in bad shape. It looked as though the poor thing had never been brushed. So I bought a brush and have been petty good about brushing him and pulling out the loose clumps. I read that bunnies shed about 3 to 4 times a year and I think that might be why his fur is so clumpy. I was wondering how long it takes for him to shed all his old fur, because although the fur along his back and under his chin looks nice and shinny now, the fur starting around his hind legs and going all the way to his tail is still clumpy and you can see a visible line where the fur changes.I didn’t know if there was anything I could do, or if nature will just take its course? Thanks a bunch! And I have to say, having a bunny is so much fun!

Sounds like he is shedding.  Keep up the good work of grooming/brushing him as that will decrease the amount of hair that he ingests (avoid hairball).  If he gets tired of the comb you can use damp hands and “pet” him- the wetness helps pull out loose hairs- rub your hands together to clump the hair off your hands and repeat.

Be sure to make the grooming session positive with your newly adopted bunny- a favorite, healthy treat will go a long way in him associating your grooming sessions as positive!

Hi Coley! You’re doing a great job keeping up with the grooming. The best thing here is to let it shed out on it’s own. Is any of the fur on the butt collecting poo in it? If so, you might want to try a dry bath on that bit. My two rabbits went through a shed about 2 months ago and are at it again since the weather has gotten nicer. In fact I just groomed them yesterday and did a whole bunny tune-up on them. Since Emmitts fur is in such bad shape, be sure to check the toenails and clean the scent glands as well if this bunny has been neglected. Also it would be a good idea to have the vet give your rabbit the once-over to make sure it is in the best of health too (if you haven’t already).

                  Hi coley and welcome!!

You said that the fur has brushed out everywhere but around his bum and legs…it almost sounds to me like you have a lionhead bunny…What breed do you have? Or do you have pictures?

No I don’t think he is a lion head. Honestly, I am not sure what his breed his because the woman I got him from didn’t know. I will get some pictures up soon when I get my camera back from my sister. He has a small head, straight ears, and big beautiful black eyes. ( The look sort of like horse’s eyes) His fur is a soft tan, gray, and white mix , making him look like a lavender color and his belly is white along with the underside of his tail. And, he has a large dewlap.
