Full of piss and vinegar this morning….

So the barriers I had “constructed” to keep Coco from chewing the satelite ( and by virtue  the internet) had held for the past week.

 

Until this morning, when she launched  a full fledged ( successful) assault on them. And got to the cord ( which is covered) and chewed vigorously on the black plastic tubing for several  seconds before getting water bottle sprayed out of there….

I have a damp faced, heavily glaring rabbit looking at me.  In fact, she is NOT looking at me. I have her bunny back.

So what have we learned today? Time for Coco to figure out how to get around my barriers? About a week.

I fear taking the human child to soccer this morning as I suspect there is more carnage to come.

She is so fiesty this morning!

does she have a condo or pen she is in when you’re not home?

No Beka – I had “rabbit proofed” the bedroom and this is where she stays.

Although, honestly, I do think we are coming to the construction of an open type pen for when she is being like this. Part of my reluctance to construct one has to do with my husbands dislike of the rabbit being in our bedroom and my attempts to minimize the visual impact for him. He gets really funky about what he sees as “Permanent structures”.

I know, it seems ridiculous – rabbit pen….or destruction. What I see as a no-brainer becomes a complex negotiation of marriage boundaries.

I am only getting Half-back right now. A papaya tablet was happily accepted, and a bump for nose rubbing when I returned…so I think we are just wanting some more attention right now. Bad bunny Mom for not being more attentive…

And Oh. Now that I think about it, she Coco see me take the cat to the vet yesterday for her annual shots/checkup. I was extra nice to the cat when we got back as she had been very good for the checkup/shots/de-worming/shaving of matts from her belly.

I may be seeing residual from the “How DARE you pay attention to another animal in my presence….” outrage.

i think a pen might be a good idea for her. that way she can be territorial of her own space, rather than yours. i don’t recall, is the bedroom the only place you can have her? are you able to set up a pen in another part of the house? would that be better/more acceptable for your husband?

bunny proofing is never really 100%. it is nice to have a place they can go where they cannot hurt themselves or your home. it provides peace of mind when you’re not there or at night. not many bunnies can be fully free range.

Agreed…mine are free range, but they are not allowed in the study, (there’d be just no sane way to proof that room) and not allowed in our bedroom if we aren’t home.

Oh my, the complex negotiation of marriage boundaries. That is a tough one!

What about something that looks a little more like a piece of furniture or a play house?

My 2 have yet to chew on a cord – but that does not mean I give them access to the TV or computer!

As Beka said: having them in a pen does provide me peace of mind when I’m not there or at night. And those cords can get pricey!

Well – I am picking up her Maze haven this weekend, as I had it delivered to New Hampshire and am going to visit – I am hoping that this will be a “subtle” way to introduce a “Coco house” in the bedroom.

She still comes and looks to see if the barriers are up and once she successfully leapt over ( using some books as an added springboard- smart bunny!).

On my last trip to Reno Depot, I seriously stocked up on the cord protectors. I swear I am working for rabbit materials.

And finally – I was thinking about another member said about Rabbits thinking they are clearing roots from their home by getting rid of cords, and I tried to make her a thing in her tunnel (using the jellyfish idea, upside down) which might recreate roots and thereby re-direct her. She has also REALLY gotten into the gnawing of her Oxbow bungalow. There is a nice sized hole in the back now, and she spends quite a bit of time chewing ( and eating the timothy from the bungalow).

I was thinking that maybe if she likes this, I could recreate it with Hemp….If Hemp is rabbit safe….Anyone know?

i dunno about hemp for rabbits… sorry.  had quite a giggle reading your post.  coco sounds like quite a fun bun! 

have you thought about making a nic fence that could be set up when you need to ‘house’ coco and folded up when you’re home to supervise?  i made a couple of nic fences that i use in various spots and fold like an accordian to tuck away when i’m not using them.  originally i made them to surround my dinette set to save it from being chewed on but now that i work outside of the house during the day the girls stay in their bedroom.  so now i use the fences to cordon off areas in the bedroom so they can have free- roam seperately (they share a room but are not yet bonded).  just a thought.  might be easier to ‘sneak’ in there since it’s only a temp structure.
