Fruit Twigs

I see that a lot of you talk about fruit tree twigs, i have a peach tree in my yard, can i clip some of those?  Also where are you guys getting this friut twigs?  I really want to give some to Bunny and see if he likes them and if he does I would like to stock up..   can anyone give me info????

The information that I have read about tree twigs is to limit them to multiseeded fruit trees (apples, pears) and avoid single seeded fruit (peach, apricot, plum).  There are other good trees too, including ash, birch and a couple of others.  Here is what the HRS website says:

"Fruit tree branches, such as, apricot and peach are toxic while attached to the tree but not after they’re cut and dried (a month or more). Lisa McSherry and Rusty Fayter, who package The Busy Bunny baskets, share this research. Another tip they offer for your bunny’s safety is to keep your purchases of imported baskets limited to willow, the only basket material not sprayed with pesticide."

Here is what Medirabbit has to say on the subject:

"Trees carrying drupes – single seeded fruits (including plum, cherry, apricot, and peach are toxic to rabbits.

Safe Trees:
Willow, spruce, ash, birch, maple, juniper, poplar, apple, pear, hazel and hawthorne"

I give Sophie apple branches all the time. My parents’ friend has an orchard. I also get them from Farmer Dave. He has a website and sells on ebay. Great products, no pesticides.

Apple twigs are a big hit at my house too. Our rescue sells them, but I’ve seen them for sale online as well.

i just bought some of the small apple sticks from farmer dave.. they were awesome, my bunnies loved them- and they smelled really good. anyone else tried anything besides the apple sticks from farmer dave?

I got timmy hay from him last time – it’s certainly yummy-smelling but not as green as the oxbow I was getting from Red Door.  It’s a bit stemmier too, but Pepper doesn’t seem to mind.  The price was good.

Sophie has the hanging toy in her cage. I replace it literally every three weeks. right now we’re obsessed with the dried pears. He really is a great seller. I order from him monthly. He even sent Sophie a little sumthin’ extra at Christmas in our order!

well i got my first order of apple twigs…  Bunny likes em but not all that much…  i am disapointed  🙁

Lisa – bunnies often decide things are more excited after a lil time, hopefully bunny will too 🙂

Farore – i don’t know for sure – lemon trees aren’t listed on any of the poisonous lists i checked – but i’d likely stick with apple or pear just to be safe…

Are twigs from crabapple okay?  Just wondering, because we have a nice big pesticide free crabapple in our yard.

i remember reading somewhere that crabapple is bad for them.. I don’t remember where. but there are two crabapple trees in front of the apt. and I’ve never given the bunnies any because I remember reading crabapple is bad for them…
