Frosty’s bum has bald spots

Well, I’m still learning. Should’ve given her a cornstarch bath, I found out –

Anyway, she’s got some bald spots. Again, if anyone knows really helpful tips on caring for Rex type fur, please pass them along! Frosty and I will be most grateful. I’m going to hunt for bunny brushes that I can’t remember where I put when we moved – the ones I’m thinking of are soft and might  gently get loose hair out and help fluff matted areas. Trying to rinse the pee off was a bad idea – the fur kinked up and matted. We’re working on getting it back to normal.

Could the bald spots be partly from shedding? Or is something else going on? They often can have temporary bald looking spots, most often on the butt and back from a big shed, and it is that time of year!

We have several members here with Rex who may be able to give you something more specific for that type of fur.

I have a Rex/dwarf mix and the molts are terrible! Is the bald spot red? If it is just flesh toned, that is ok. The new hair just hasn’t caught up yet.

My vet encourages gentle plucking. We have a lot of issues with GI Stasis, even though we up the greens and hay during molts and brush him A LOT. My vet this past time recommended we shave down his hair to super short next time he starts a molt– that way digested hair will be shorter. My Rex’s normal hair is short, but when he molts it becomes a decent length, with silver/white roots. I’m not sure if that is because he is a mix or not.

I haven’t tried this yet, but my vet also recommended using an ovenmit, with the sticky/grabby side, to pet buns to get loose fur off that the furminator doesn’t get.

My first buns wasn’t a Rex, but she got sick and needed butt baths. They sell dry rabbit shampoo that was amazing!

Thanks – I’ve heard lots of good about the Furminator. I do have a little rubber brush that I need to find, wonder if that would also help. Maybe she is just starting to go through a shed at the same time as all this other business, and that just set it off a bit sooner.

My Mini-Rex often gets bald patches during a heavy shed. The Furminator is great for that thick, plushy Rex fur. Just be very careful to be gentle and not to overgroom. I also use the plucking and wet-hands method for grooming Stormy.
