I’ve seen so many great Hay Rack ideas on here, I was wondering if anyone has seen a free standing hay rack, or had an idea for one?
I’d like a hay rack that does not mount to anything, and has a flat back, so hay can only escape out the front. I’m trying to find an easy/clean way to keep PitStops hay upstairs, so that i have minimal hay trailing through my house.
Oh, I want to make one so bad but don’t have the room in my bunny pen. I’ve wanted one that is a miniature of a wooden hay feeder cradle, like they use for deer in managed wildlife areas. But there are other options for free-standing racks, most notably the hay saver box like save-a-bunny offered it on Etsy.

I just e-mail a friend who was making similar ones with the proceeds going to our rescue, to see if they still are. Those are definetly very nice and tidy too.
I am thinking more compact though, thinner?, so it can go overtop or beside the litter box.
If i was better with wood working/building my ideal set up would be a side table, that has an open front to let the bunny in and have the litter box inside, then a closed back that has a compartment that opens as a hay sort of tray. …. in my dreaming bunny furniture land right now :p
I’d like to see what the ones your friend was making look like! What is the name of this recue again?
Our HRS store has those for sale. I suppose you could always drill a couple small holes and attatch it where you wanted, instead of it sitting on the ground.
I wish there was an HRS store near me…
I think Meadow would find a way INSIDE of that hay rack.
What about making one out of a cardboard box? A nice sturdy one with holes cut in it? Then it could be any size you wanted. I’ve been thinking about making one for Rhine.
kleenex boxes work well for this but they can be tossed which sends hay fines everywhere. I really think it has to be wood to be stationary enough without beiing attached.
I want something ‘pretty’ LOL… only because it’ll be in my living room. So the pre-made woods ones would work. Just the space I have the main litter pan (under a side table between the couch and wall) is very limited. I have a square high back pan, to give you an idea. I usually just toss some hay up the back side of it.
The Small Animal Rescue Society (www.smallanimalrescue.org) doesn’t have the hay feeders on their site
so that’s why I emailed my friend to see if they are even still available. They come in 1, 2 and 3 or 4 openings, and the openings also have a bit of mesh around them from what i remember.

Those holes are definiely Monkey sized rofl.
There is this pricey hay ‘rack’ it is pretty neat and contained. You could use it for design idea if not wanting to buy one. I’ve linked straight to page showing different set ups. http://www.wabbitworks.net/hay_buffet_buddies.htm
I was thinking you adapt a wooden CD rack (tower) to act as a standing hay rack. Maybe by attaching bent nic grid for the front?
There are easy to find and so many types around.
I like the wooden one Petzy posted too. They remind me of nesting boxes. Also of bread boxes! I wonder if you could convert a bread box into one of those?
These were the earlier version of the Save A Bunny hay racks.
A modified bread box is a very neat idea!!!
JerseyGirl, those are the ones we make! Exactally!
I’ve not heard back to wether we are still carrying them or not. Still waiting.
So they are! lol. I did an image search just then for “No waste hay rack” and it brought up the exact pictures for Small Animal Rescue site. Maybe it was Save A Bunny promoting it on their site at the time? I saved the pictures over a year ago. My search just now also took me to a bunspace forum on this topic. A member there made a hayrack out of a plastic bin. Cut a hole out the side and lined the edges with plastic edging strips. You could do something like that using a narrow rectangular bin and binder spine clips. Or use wicker if it stays together with hole cut in it.
Something custom made like this, you can position the access hole exactly were needed and size it so nobunny can attempt to get into the hay rack.
I have one that I got last Xmas from my friend Mikebun here on BB, Bun is wondering why it’s empty right now….
She loves sitting on it actually
he made that? Can you show more detail of it, Lint?

Thanks! It’s very well made. I want one…
How did you join the sides together and did you use a Skilsaw for the holes?
a nail gun, and yea it had to of been a skill saw for the holes. And he sanded everything down nice and smooth.
The more I look at this the more I love it. I have a possible idea that may work. It looks like a bread box, I I coould find one I could cut holes in the center as it is here and I should have a hay bin for the buns.
I don’t know what was up with Oreo this morning but she was following me everywhere this morning, if my hubby and I passed each other she didn’t know which one to follow. I am going shopping tonite and I am going to check out bread boxes; I wonder if they even make them anymore.
I agree with it being wood. I have a a bun that likes to move things around in the living room such as his liter pan and anything else he can pick up.
