After my Louie began constantly chewing his pen, he also learned how to jump onto taller objects. I was super worried he would escape his xpen in the night, even though my room is bunny proof. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I decided to begin full-time free roam! My mom isn’t 100% on board with free roam, especially once I return to school, but until summer ends, my goal is to really bond with my bun and understand his habits while roaming free. So far he hasn’t been destructive, and as the next few months pass, I will continue to observe his behavior and make sure he is safe free-roaming. My only concerns are wooden furniture, my curtains, and my shag rug. He hasn’t touched the wood furniture, but I know chewing on it is a possibility, so we will wait and see. He loves playing in the curtains, but if he chews them it isn’t my biggest concern. Lastly, I have a nice shag rug I like and don’t plan on getting rid of, and Louie loves running on it, but he has tried to nibble at it. It’s hard to distinguish whether he is sniffing or not, but I was informed rabbits only try to chew what they can digest, so if he nibbles at it a bit, I think it will be ok. If he starts eating it vigorously I will change something. I am keeping his xpen and setup for his home base for now, as my mom doesn’t want me to remove it, but hopefully, if free-roaming is successful we can save the pen for outside playtime or if guests come over, etc. Yay for us, another happy free roamer!

That’s great to hear! I would agree that keeping the xpen and set-up up is a good idea if there’s room. Sometimes you need a quick place to safely secure the rabbit for some reason.

I’m sorry to hear that the bar chewing was still going on. Did you end up trying the putting something against the outerwalls of the pen to try and dissuade it?

… also, don’t be too shocked if he begins chewing the xpen bars, even though it’s open. Rabbits can be weird like that, haha.

He still chews on them, but it’s not as disruptive as the “I’m trying to escape” chewing, so it’s better. I had originally placed hanging chewtoys and put a sheet on the outside but it continued, so I let him free roam all day now, and he seems much more content and is flopping more too!
