My rabbit, Henryk, has his litter box, hay, food/water bowl, and boxes to hide in set up in his Xpen. He has free range to hop almost anywhere in our home all day, but he spends about half an hour each day gnawing on his cage. Neither my significant other or I can figure out why he has this behavior. Henryk specifically enjoys pulling the corner of one part of the cage inward making a convex type of angle. If I fix it back to being a square he’ll drop everything to pull the cage back and bite on it more. Just want to understand if this is just my bunny being a little interior decorator, or if it’s a sign of displeasure?

Our rabbits do this as well. We’ve put logs of wood around the enclosure on the inside and outside to maintain it’s structure. They don’t adjust the cage immediately but it usually happens it overnight whilst they were shut in the enclosure. I assume it happens as they nudge up against the door trying to get out as they prefer it when they have free access between their enclosure and the rest of the house. Does Henryk do this when his enclosure door is open?

One of our rabbits will constantly try to move anything new/shifted in the enclosure, if you shift stuff around he will immediately return it to it’s proper home. If Henryk hasn’t shifted the cage whilst trying to open the door when it’s closed, I would guess that he prefers his setup and is doing his own version of “cleaning up” to return it to normal.

His cage is open 24/7. We only close Henryk’s cage when we clean the apartment or move furniture around. He likes sleeping in our room at night so we give him full access in and out of his cage. The cage door will be wide open and he’ll still bite at the bars.
