I don’t need any advice or anything, just needed rabbit people to talk to because Ben refused breakfast and the vet isn’t open yet. His tummy doesn’t feel hard but he wouldn’t even eat carrot and was sitting hidden in a place he doesn’t normally sit. I gave him a little critical care and now I’m just waiting for the vet to open so I can drop him off, or at least get some metacam and whatever motility drug they use. This bun has already had stasis 3 times so I try to be very vigilant about making sure he’s eating. Normally he’s waiting for me in the morning and then begging for salad but today he was slow to get up and didn’t ask for salad at all. Poor guy.

            Hi Bam lol

Ok now I do have a question. This bunny NEVER refuses his favorite treats but refused all food this morning. Now my boyfriend offered him a treat and he ate it and says he’s nibbling on hay. So my question is, if he has a mild tummy ache could giving him one little dose of critical care have helped? Maybe he just needed a little fiber and water? We are monitoring him closely.

Edit: this week has been unusually hot and Sunday the ac ran for 12 hours straight. We have a large window unit, not central. It was about 100 degrees Sunday which is very unusual. Could he be a little dehydrated and needed a drink?

Yes, I think a little bit of critical care could have set the intestines in motion (maybe he successfully passed some gas as a result). The CC could so have given him enough energy to perk up and want to eat.

So great to hear that he’s started to eat on his own!

I just got my lunch break and gave him a little salad and he ate up. I’m so relieved!

Glad he’s doing better!!!  I have had buns had some sort of “gas attack” where they refuse everything but then perk up an hour later. I would have done exactly as you did: critical care and a tummy rub. Sometimes I think the critical care alone is enough to keep things moving!

And I agree dehydration could have been at play. I have been learning more and more recently about the importance of hydration in keeping the gut moving well, and how it can set off a cascade of slow down and even nausea (even though buns can’t vomit). So critical care definitely helps, and giving a little water never hurts either. Have you ever done the “skin tenting” test to check for dehydration? You basically grab a handful of scruff, and then see how it snaps back. If it kind of slowly rolls back into place, bun is dehydrated.

I didn’t know about skin tenting but it’s in my mental locker now!

I just learned it last year when Bun Jovi went into stasis! It is not perfect but it was helpful for me!

Ben just happened to have a nail trim scheduled today and I’m happy to report that the Dr listened to his tummy, which was nice and gurgly, and also examined his teeth and they were good. She’s an exotic specialist so I feel very much better now 🙂
