Found lost baby bunny

Hello! Yesterday my cousin and I found a pet bunny on the side of the road. At first I thought it was a full grown bunny, but once I got closer I realized she’s probably not even 8 weeks old! She’s very tiny. She’s some kind of lop breed, but not sure which at the moment. So anyways, I’m gonna take her to the vet soon to make sure she’s in good health. Everything on the surface looks great; teeth, eyes, nose, ears, and that good stuff. I’m also concerned with how young she is. I’m gonna keep her and try bonding her with my existing pair. So my question is, should I be feeding her anything specific? Currently she’s just eating what the adult buns eat; oxbow Timothy pellets and hay. And she’s drinking water real good. She’s just sooooo little, and I want to make sure she’s getting the nutrients she needs. I know for a fact she was dumped because she was by a box of apples. Makes me sad someone can just leave a defenseless baby bunny like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I’d skip the pellets until you know how old she really is. Because under 8 weeks isn’t even a pet yet. They should still be with mom until 8 weeks and weaned around 6 weeks. If she’s under 6 weeks she should be on a milk replacement and hay. Solid foods could upset her GI tract at this point and lead to diarrhea. But yes, definitely get her to a vet ASAP

Okay, thank you! I have an appointment for one of my lionhead bunnies tomorrow. I called and asked if I could squeeze her in too, and they said yes. So she’s got an appointment tomorrow at 8.

It’s great of you to adopt the little bun. I just want to say that you’re great and I hope everything turns out ok! If she’s a baby, I think alfalfa is supposed to be good for them if they’re old enough for hay (just not so much for the grownups). I’ve only got one grown bunny, so I am no expert. Good luck at the vet! I’m interested to see how old they think she is.

Vet visit went great! He said she is in great health for finding her on the side of the road. She weighs 1.3 pounds, and is 6-8 weeks old. He double checked the gender to make sure it’s a girl, and he’s 99.9% sure it is a girl. We aren’t sure what breed of lop she is, but he said we will know in about a month. So yeah, everything went really good! I went out and bought her a bigger cage, and some oxbow young rabbit pellets. She’s a very sweet bunny! So glad I found her when I did because we’ve been having bad storms roll in since I found her.

Awww… I’m soglad your paths crossed. Yes, at that age, for the next six weeks, unlimited young bunny pellets and an alfalfa hay are recommended. After her 12th week, start slowly and gradually introducing a variety of fresh and dried leafy greens, with the odd veg or fruit as treat (one at a time every few feedings is best, to check for tummy tolerance).
