I recently signed up as a foster mom for a small animal rescue near me. Since she doesn’t have any one else capable of housing rabbits and she gets in quite a bit of urgent calls, I went ahead and started preparing. I got an old and rusted kennel and x-pen from my mother that she had no use for.

I’m still foster-less for the time being. BUT, I finished the cages!

        Here’s the large pen. This’d be used for day-time rabbit housing. It’s 4ft x 6ft.

It folds up really nicely too:

        Here’s the “night-time kennel”:

It took all day to strip the rust and paint them. Painting metal is something I’ll never do again, unless absolutely necessary.  Both will have fleece liners in them, and I’m thinking about adding in a shelf for the kennel and possibly rigging on up in the pen.

          Welcome : )
It’s great that you’re able to do this. I’m sure you’ll have some bunnies in there in no time. Do you have rabbits of your own?

*If you don’t mind, I can post the pictures from the links directly in my post here. It will make it easier for other readers to see them if they’re not inclined to cut and paste the links.

That’d be great. I’d appreciate it. I would do it myself but i’m working from my iPhone at the moment.

I don’t have any bunnies of my own – but I do have other animals: 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 betta, 1 cockatiel, 6 hamsters, 1 RES turtle, and 4 mollies. 🙂

              Tis done. ^^

I like how you have used the baby gate(?) to extend the size of the pen. Will you be putting anything under the pen to protect the carpet “just in case”?

                Thanks. 🙂

I’ll put a heavy tarp down with a layer of towels on top of that, andthen a layer of fleece on the very top. I’ve heard that they are chewers so I’ll be really careful not to leave the tarp exposed.

I love the baby gate! The cage seemed a bit small and I wanted to find something to expand it with. Works as an awesome gate too.

I have my first foster bun coming in tomorrow! She was found loose outside. Apparently someone let her go. She’s black. That’s about all i know at this point. I’m getting her at 1pm central time tomorrow. I’ll have lots of pictures, I’m sure! Gotta figure how to best set up the cage.

Congrats!  It is so much fun having bunz around.  Only one question; is the baby gate plastic?  If so, be careful if you ever want to re-use it.  One morning we came out to find a PERFECT hole in it.  He chewed every individual piece until the entire section popped out!  They are endless in their mischief…enjoy!

LOL! It is plastic. I’ll keep an eye out. If she chews it, it’s not that big of a deal. We don’t use it for anything else anymore – we have a new one for the dogs. An hour and a half until we get her! Excitement!
