Hey I have a litter question for you.  So Layla is about a year and a half old now and does GREAT at litter training throughout the house.  She’s even allowed to go all over the home and aside from the occasional doo doo, we have no problems.  It’s in her cage, where she only is overnight, that we have a problem.  No matter where I put the litter box, she just goes somewhere else!  She purposely MOVES the litterbox if she wants to go underneath it.  We’d  gotten this problem fixed for a while but all of a sudden she’s doing it again.  What could this mean?  What can I do?

My guess would be that Layla isn’t enjoying being caged at night so it showing her displeasure for the cage. I’d suggest putting in some extra toys to keep her entertained.

What kind of litter do you use, Jamie? Not saying that this is the case, but when Calypso had a bad reaction to a floor cleaner I used, he stopped using his litter box. At the time, I was using Yesterday’s News, which poked into his sore little feet. At the suggestion of the vet, I changed to CareFresh, which is much softer, and the problem was solved! Hopefully, Layla’s feet are fine, but bunnies are finicky. If she finds her litter uncomfortable, that could be a reason for not using her box. Good luck figuring this out!

maybe putting a layer of hay above the litter in her box might entice her to use it.

Do you secure the box to the cage side? Also, do you “mess with her cage” while she’s in there or within her view? She may be marking it. But I mostly think it’s as Mark said, she’s P’OD. Would you have room to attached pen to her cage so she has a little more room overnight?

Could be territorial or boredom. Territorial in that the house is shared and she knows this, but her cage is hers-and she wants you to know. But dumping the litter box may be her saying she doesn’t agree with being caged or is bored. Try securing the litter box and see what happens

Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond to this! Layla’s pen is a huge outdoor dog kennel that takes up my entire living room. She has stopped her naughty habit.. the culprit? Smelly fabric softener on the sheet I cover the bottom of her cage with! It took a bit of detective work though. Thanks so much!

Good for you for figuring that out. Plus your discovery will help others too – sometimes it’s just the simple stuff that’s right before our “noses”. Rabbits can be hard to figure out sometimes, and it sure is a relief when you can figure it out.
