So, Brian Bum had his booster jabs Friday and he and Bettie Bean had their claws done & a general once over.  Asked the vet (lovely she is too, phewf!) how much it is for Bettie to be spayed….£85!!  Cor lummy, i think i hid my shock rather well, and asked about the risks – harping on again about how they almost killed my Bumstar after letting him overheat after his bits were chopped.  She told me that there is a significantly higher risk with girly buns, but MORESO with Lionheads as they are "slighly more complicated".  Whilst I (yes me) mentioned about the risk of girly bun cancer if they aren’t spayed, she agreed BUT didn’t recommend (as Brian has been done), told me to think seriously either way, moreso pushing me towards not getting Bean done.  Oh goodness, what to do?!?!?!?!

spays are more complicated and an invasive procedure than neutering, so the procedure generally costs more. I’ve heard of spays at low cost clinics being very inexpensive – but most vets charge anywhere from $100 to $350. I don’t think $180 (which is about 85 pounds) is out of line.

Lionheads should not be different from any other spay – however if she is very small that could be part of the reason the vet is concerned. I am not sure why she was trying to discourage you from having Bean spayed. Considering the cancer rate – plus all the territorial and behavior issues, most bunny savvy vets will really encourage people to have their girls spayed.

It may be that she just doesn’t feel confident in her spaying abilities? Has she done a lot of successful rabbit spays? After Brian almost being roasting, it might be time to consider taking Bean to another vet for her spay. We travel over an hour for our vet, despite there are many others closer – since it was worth it to get care we feel confident in.

good luck with sorting it out and let us know if you have more questions

That was my first thought too!

the price sounds about right on too.  i know Meadow was $186 with all meds and everything included.  the procedure itself was 125…

I’ve another thought on it too.  When I lived in Sweden the vets would not spay females, but would instead offer birth control pills for girl dogs and cats. I was really dumbfounded at this and wondered why, they said that they do not like performing a major surgery and think that the pill is a more humane choice.

as for your girl, size too can make a big difference, if she is small, things are a little harder to get to.  Bean weighs how much now? I think I might opt for another vet who is more confident, rather than one who is trying to sway you not to do it, that’s just plain nuts.

Any rabbit-savvy vet with sufficient experience will NOT deter you from spaying your doe. The chances of your doe dying from cancer are way more elevated than the chances of her dying from complications related to the surgery. Seriously.

I had little confidence in vets here before just because rabbits are rarely treated at a vet’s and when my girl suffered from Closed Pyometra, I almost lost her. Though she was very ill and dehydrated, they performed an emergency spay. I was worried sick that she would not survive the anesthesia due to her condition but she pulled through.

So really, find yourself a good vet who has performed spays successfully, and don’t hesitate.
