food storage?

I’m wondering how all of you keep the food (hay/pellets) nice and neat in storage.  Pics welcomed!

 

This is what I have going on right now, which is not really working because the bags are way too big.  I’ve got alfalfa, oat, orchard, and pellets all in their own ziploc XL storage bags, then I have all of those bags in a large rubbermaid-like tote, along with the pellet litter in it’s own bag that it came in, a vinegar/water mixture spray bottle and paper towels.  It all fits in there, but the bags are way too big and they are all in there very messy and it’s a hassle to dig through to find the right one, etc, etc… BUT the good thing about the large bags is that I can hold his feeder in the bag and fill it up without spilling hay everywhere.

I have an old storage container that I bought from Wal-mart.  It is a Richell Pet Food Keeper, 13 qt container with a lid that is hinged so it is very easy to open and close without the hassle of the lid coming all the way off, BUT I cannot find any of these locally.  I found them on a website, opentip.com for 5 bucks a piece (richell 13qt multi-purpose storage), which is a great deal, but by the time shipping and handling is added in, I’m paying double the price-40 some bucks. (buying 4 of them)

Looking for some easy, hassle-free ideas, and somewhat cheap!

I’m interested in storage ideas as well. Right now I’ve taken over the hallway linen closet which works well for stowing everything away, but it is a bit awkward dragging the 9lb bag of hay around the house to fill all the hay racks.

I use a short sterilite container to store pellets.  It fits a 10lb bag of Oxbow perfectly.

 

I use a tall one for litter (this way I can fill it up from the big 40lb bag once every few weeks.)

As far as hay, I just keep it in the big box it comes in (I buy the 50lb boxes of Oxbow).  You want hay to be able to breathe, so you don’t want it sealed up too tightly.

Can you leave the hay in one central spot and carry the racks to the hay?  That’s what I do, it makes more sense.

This is what I use.  I just bought these and have it posted in the Lounge.  I keep litter, pellets, treats and supplies in it.  The only concern brought up is that the pellets aren’t air tight in the drawers.  To rectify that I am going to keep the pellets in ziplock gallon size bags. 
I keep my hay in a 58 qt Sterelite container I bought at Walmart for $5.  I keep my 50 lb box in the basement and fill the tote every week or two.  Then I take the litterbox to the tote to fill it and no mess.

That’s not a bad idea. I fastened all the hay racks to the pen walls with a pair of pliers because sometimes they get pretty vigorous in their pursuit of hay.  But maybe it’s time to unfasten them.

You can still fasten the racks: attach a loosely tied ziptie and then use a dog clip to attach the ziptie to the pen wall. I’ve been doing this for a long time and it keeps the rack in place, but can be easily removed to fill. And since you’re using a dog clip, you never have to actually cut off the original ziptie.

I use a Japanese rice storage container. I got it from my job. It says on English on the box that it can be used for other food storage. It has a open/close top and seals nicely.

It looks similar to this.. but considerably smaller. Mine is clear and holds to 5 lb of rabbit food, which is the amont that I buy anyway..

I keep a 1 tablespoon measuring spoon in the container.

Whoa whoa whoa you guys are all so clean and tidy. I bring to you a bunny mess fit for 5 buns…..*drum roll* MY MESS.

I buy a bale of hay at a time, the downside is that it’s messy and I get hay all over. I have bought a hay bale bag for my next bale which I will be buying maybe at the end of January, there are a couple of flakes left in there.

I have a huge rubbermaid storage container that I keep the bags of bedding, hay, and litter in. On top I have a smaller bin for her pellets, her brush, box of extra toys, etc. I can just lift the top without having to remove all of the stuff on it to get to her items. I like keeping most of her stuff in the original bags, in case I need to look at them for whatever reason.

I purchased some plastic storage containers from BB&B. The one I got for pellets isn’t quite big enough for the 10lb bags, unfortunately, so I fill it up, wait a few weeks, then dump in the rest of the bag. I wish I had bought a bigger one.

I do have a bigger one for hay storage inside the house (I’d use it for pellets but we drilled holes in it for ventilation). It’s not huge, but holds at least a day’s worth of hay so I can haul it up from the basement.

In the basement I have a 50lb box of Oxbow hay – I fill up my small plastic container from that. I also have a large storage bin that I used to use when I bought hay in smaller bags. I still use this if the pet sitter is coming over – I’ll fill it up and put it by the cage so she doesn’t have to go hunting for hay.

I buy hay by the bales, I store in in my rabbit room, in a wood box we made. Only problem is I have to have a little fence around it to stop naughty bunnies from jumping up into it and eating/peeing/pooping there.
I keep my food in a plastic container, and my wood stove pellets too.

I’m hesitant to post this picture… what a disaster! lol…

Anyways, Bunny Pens & Play room, hay is top left, supplies (medical/treats/toys etc.) beside it, grooming in the kit by the chair (where i sit and groom/cuddle). Works well for us, it’s messy but that happens with 7+ bunnies LOL

I went to wal-mart today and got 2- 3 drawer systems that I stacked on top of each other. It looks just like Amy&Hugo’s pic except, the top drawer on each unit is smaller than the other two, so in one I put Sunny’s misc. items(apple sticks, willow ball, wicker balls, comb/brush, harness/leash, etc) and in the other one, I put the spray bottle that has vinegar and water that I clean the litter box out with and a roll of paper towels.

The only thing that is not as good as my previous set-up is that the hay spills out when I fill up his hay rack; however, this set-up is way better than what I WAS doing. When I was moving everything today I discovered Sunny pee all in the container I had it in previously. He discovered how to jump up in there and found hay to nibble on=pee!lol

I just leave Peepers pellets in the resealable bag, it sits on top of her cage, she’s off pellets next month so I dont really need anything perminant..thats where all her stuff is lol her hay is in a 5 gallon bucket beside her cage. Jenny’s treats and extra toys and such are all in a drawer beside my bed, and her hay in in a rubbermaid near her cage. the main bale of hay is in the tool room in the basment sitting on top of an old bird cage base.

This is a bin I found at Target – couple of colors with matching (or not) tops. I really like how it’s working out.

I got an unfinished wood cabinet, not cheap, because the clutter was making me crazy and it’s a piece of furniture in a room you can see easily. But it holds this plastic bin. What I love is that it has a seam in middle of the top, so you can pop open only half, where I fit an entire Mini Bale of Oat Hay and just reach in to get a handful, then pop it closed. It keeps the air circulating, I don’t have to pull it out the whole way and uncover it all completely.

when I’m using the smaller bag of Oxbow Bunny Basics T pellets, it fits on the top shelf and I just open the resealable bag, scoop, and close.

Amy n Hugo  you keep their hay n stuff in the washer  n dryer?    lol         I have to get pics taken tomorrow.  I got 3 storage containers in living room with litter and hay  about 4 in the bedroom.    I get bales too.

OH plus in my nightstand  I have 2 drawers for the bunny supplies    gas stuff    syringes  neosporin   Cottons lip stuff    extra grooming things   harnesses n leashes    etc.

ON top their cage is an empty ice cream container with their food n it          n   craisins raisins my tens unit  

Oh I got extra unopened bag o litter by the computer area too.      Yep they have taken over my whole house.
