Hi All, as some of you know I am doing my research on bunnies before we get one (if all goes well) and I have been reading about different foods.  I feed my chins Oxbow Chinchilla Deluxe and they love it and thought that I would feed my bunny Oxbow Rabbit if no one has any bad things to say about it.  Also, because I have not been around rabbit food – what are some other foods if Oxbow is not good that are high quality?

I was also feeding my chins PANR at one point because it was reccomended to me, and I switched for random reasons.  Is this a reccomended brand among rabbit owners?

Oxbow is about the best there is. Oxbow 15/223 for rabbits under 1 year and Oxbow Bunny Basics T for adult rabbits. I WISH I could feed mine this!

Oxbow is a really good brand, I don’t know if it makes good chin food, but it makes good rabbit food and if it makes good rabbit food I would guess that its food for chinchillas is high quality as well.

Oxbow is said to be the best.   Zupreem/Nature’s (something)  and Kaytee make timmy pellets too.  1 of my buns likes kaytee timmy better and the other liked the oxbow timmy better.  I know Cotton likes Zupreem too.

Please by all means avoid food that has those “things” in it.  You know dried pieces of fruit etc.  Too fattening.  Avoid yogurt treats too.

You can make your own bunny cookies or order from online for their treats. Petstore treats usually aren’t that good for them.  Petsmart might carry good healthy oxbow treats as well.

Welcome by the way.  We are glad to have you.  Even if you don’t have a bunny right now.

Oxbow seems to be the recommended brand among bunny people. It’s spot on as far as having the right amounts of stuff, not too little, not too much (fat, protein, fiber, etc…) A big perk for many (myself included) is that it’s now available at some local stores so you might not have to do shipping depending on where you are. If you’re already getting it for your Chinchillas, I’d recommend you keep with that for your bunny.

Other popular brands are Zupreem and American Pet Diner. I haven’t used these myself, but I know others do.

oxbow seems to be a good brand. make sure you offer you bunny at least a half hour of supervised excersize daily! read the diet page on this site, it rocks! oh yeah, you might not want to give your bun any veggies until its about 5 months. its tummy might not be able to handle it

I disagree on the veggies- I started my bunny that I got as a youngster much earlier than 5 months.  She was about 10-12 weeks old when we got her- I let her settle in for a week or 2 and then started introducing the veggies that are known to be mild to well handled by most bunnies.  She obviously must not have had veggies previously as she refused to even try anything green for at least a week, then she graduated up to refusing to try anything NEW for 3 days, and now she tries just about everything offered but she eats her favorites first.

I know other baby bunnies start veggies even before they are weaned- if Mom is getting her daily greens/veggies the babies learn from Mom and eat some too.  There is a member on here that fosters bunnies and they had some cute videos posted on Jane and her 2 babies eating veggies!

Yes, veggies can be started younger than previously recommended. In small amounts, they should be okay for a young bunny.

Achun the T formula is made from timothy hay, whereas the 15/223 is made from alfalfa hay. Baby bunnies (up until 8 months/1 year) need the extra nutrients found in the alfalfa hay. As they can (and need?) unlimited pellets right now I would switch them.

Well, you actually don’t have your rabbit yet do you? I would recommend the Oxbow and actually it would be perfectly fine to give them the Bunny Basics T at any age as long as it’s a high quality pellet that is what is most important.

I got my mini rex when she was approximately 4 months old. We started her on timothy pellets right away since we didn’t want to have to switch her just a couple months later. You can give some alfalfa hay, along with timothy hay at this point.

Thanks Beka. I thought that just adding alfalfa hay might work, but I didn’t know for sure. What about mixing the two types of pellets?

The problem with that is that the bun may start to pick out one type over another… I would just give timothy pellets. Much simpler.

i bought some oxbow alfalfa hay to give them since my pellets are timothy based. when i first got them, i gave them alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets. they first hated timothy pellets but now go nuts for them. funny bunnies.
