My bunny continually flops on his side. We are at my in-laws and he just keeps flopping on his side. He does not do this at home and I am not sure if it’s because they have carpet so he is more comfortable or if something might be wrong! Any advice helps.

It is likely to be comfort on the carpet, but sometimes rabbits can posture out of character because of gas and discomfort. Aside from the flopping, are there any odd signs? Weird poop, pee, appetite, energy? Rabbits also tend to flop to cool off. Carpet is hotter than other flooring so it could be an attempt to cool down.

It’s a really good thing. They do this when they’re really content and comfy. My rabbit does this after she’s eaten and she has some blankies to flop onto and she just gets comfy, does a flop and takes a nap hahah Maybe you should look into getting a carpet rug or something for your bun to hang out on at home? One that doesn’t have long enough fibers for your bunny to chew on and ingest. I don’t know what your bun’s living situation is like but they do like soft things so if it’s not used to soft things/carpet I can see why it’s flopping suddenly in that environment.

Thank you all so much! That made me feel so much more confident about his flopping because that was the only behavior change I noticed and just wanted to be sure it is not a sign of discomfort. We are going to look into getting another rug, we got rid of the one we had because he kept peeing on it but he has not peed in the floor many times at all since.

If you get him fixed, that’ll get rid of the territory marking as well

Both my bunnies flop regularly. Indeed, I saw Panda flop with demonstrable vigor onto her side this very morning after she and Fernando got their morning treat!

Yes, rabbits prefer carpet because that gives them better grip for running. They’ll feel more safe with firmer footing under their feet. Rabbits will also flop more often in hotter areas. Our Breintje rarely flops during winter, but is flopped out in front of the fan in summer.
