› FORUM › HABITATS AND TOYS › flooring: horrible idea?
Ok, so I have tried a sheet and foam puzzle pieces so far as flooring. My husband doesn’t want to buy carpet because he doesn’t want Albert destroying it. He likes to pee on the sheet and it makes a huge mess with litter and hay. I’ve gone through several sheets in the last few months. The foam mats were awesome until his hormones hit and he chewed them up. So, back to the sheet I go. Right now we have carpet remnant down under the sheet but I wouldn’t just use that since it is a longer pile and It could think entice him to chew. Anyway, I digress. We have unfinished concrete floor under the carpet remnants. We looked into rubberized gym mats but those are about 300 bucks for 12×12 piece. Is concrete a totally bad idea? He doesn’t mind a slippery floor since he would run around and binky on the linoleum in the classroom…would it be too cold? Is it unsafe? ugh I just can’t seem to get the flooring right. It would be easier if his cage was just for sleeping but he is in it full time (it is 8×6 oval…well it is whatever shape he tugs it into now I guess since he won’t leave it alone. Doesn’t he realize he is just making it smaller?!)
Any ideas?
Thanks guys!
Kate (and Alber-stinker!)
he is at a very active stage in his life. been fixed yet.
to keep my guys off conc I have used these but they are really heavy but worked like a charm. very dense recycled tire rubber.
Around here at outlet and discount stores you can find carpet tiles. They have a thicker back and lower pile and are usually like $10 for a bundle of 10 squares. Maybe buying a couple of bundles and duct-taping the backs together so they make an area to fit his pen? One of my bunnies attempts to dig and chew at them, but doesn’t get far because the pile is so low.
Thanks for the info! I’ll look into both those options ![]()
I like the idea of the carpet squares, or maybe just an inexpensive cut of indoor/outdoor carpeting? It could be vacuumed or shook out outside.
I absolutely love the lino flooring we have. We just made a wood base and stuck squares of lino down. So easy to clean and it looks really nice!
Can you form the cage into a rectangle? If so you can buy a piece of choroplast with 5inch raise edges to fit inside. I have the website I got mine from if you want it. You can also order edge guards or a fleece liner or fleece flippers for it. If not, I think you can purchase a flat piece of choroplast. It is easy to clean and then you can put a few random carpet squares or maybe a welcome mat for a gripped surface area for him.
I can, I can form it into a rectangle for sure. Do they make Choroplast that large?
Whatever you decide, can you keep the foam squares down underneath for insulation from the bare floor? That’s gotta be cold!
Yes, I’m sure you can find some that big. There should be flat pieces somewhere on the first website but those are bases with raised edges you can get. There are a lot of other accessories on there for cages too. The second website has fleece liners if you want one for the coroplast. I’ve ordered from both of these websites and so far a c&c cage works best for us.

I looked into the choroplast but it looks like the largest it comes is 2ftx6ft. His pen is 6ft x8ft.
Thanks for the idea though. If I am missing something let me know.
Beka, I have carpet down under the sheet and when I was using the foam. ![]()
Oh, darn. If you don’t mind having him on the concrete and you can clean it sufficiently I don’t think it would be that big of a problem if you can accomodate Albert well. If you can put something elevated into his cage with a bed or some fleece so he can get up off the floor and have warm space that’d be great. Lay down some welcome mats for him to have a grip. Maybe invest in some fleece items. Cuddle cups, cat beds, etc. Does your basement stay relatively warm? I’d think Albert my enjoy some cool basement floor spots in his cage to rest on. They usually like cool spots. Just make sure he has some options I guess. Sorry if I’m rambling lol. But no I don’t think the basement floor is all that bad of an idea.
Not sure where you’re located, but in Canada, Dollarama has square carpet pieces with adhesive on the back. You get 3 for $2.
I stuck them on some of the boxes Ziggy likes to climb so he wouldn’t slip.
Coroplast is the best! In the US you can find it at any sign shop, but in Canada any cubes or Coroplast is really hard to find. You can order it on the website www,GuineaPigCagesStore.com (I use this website for my buns and g-pigs all the time!)
Another idea I love and have used before I discovered Coroplast is to get laminate flooring pieces, like in the pic.
I ended up getting a rubber mat similar to the horse stall mats. Thanks Lazee for the idea!! I found it on rubberflooringinc.com where they also sell horse stall mats. It comes in all different roll sizes but most are typically 4 ft wide and varying lengths. I got a 4×10 ft roll. It is 1/4 inch thick and very heavy duty. It provides some nice cushion (the carpet is still underneath) but is a nice slip proof surface. He also can’t chew it as it is so strong! I have several injuries on my hands from trying to poke through it to zip tie his pen to the bottom! Overall, the width is 2 feet smaller but the length is also about 2 feet longer than before so it evens out pretty much. He has almost 40 sq feet of play space. I am thinking it will be pretty easy to wipe or sweep up if needed. It cost just under $100 which I didn’t think was too bad given it should be more of a permanent solution.
Here is a pic!

A little off topic, but I like the cardboard tunnel (maze?) box Albert’s got. Is that something that can be bought from a store?
Hi Justwildbeat! I got the Maze Haven here the the binky bunny store. Shipped super fast too.
I made it in two stories but you can configure it in several different ways. I love it!
I have Allure flooring throughout my house. It isn’t too expensive, looks like hardwood, is a floating floor and, very easy to install, clean and, if need be later, replace one or two worn pieces. It’s fire resistant, water proof and, because it is actually rubber, easy on the feet and joints too.
That looks awesome, Kbana!
I agree, that’s on the expensive side, but if it lasts forever, it’s well worth it!
Thanks! I saw your separate thread about the maze after replying to this one lol. Petsmart sells cardboard tunnel cubes made for cats, but they were expensive. $10 per cube, so the maze is a really great deal.
If anyone is curious about where to find the cubes, target has them all the time! I think its 25.97 for a pack of 6… maybe of 4?
Cant remember, but they do sell them there!
U R welcome, glade it fit the bill, Always glade to help. I have several set ups, and use the carpet sqs in the rec room, the stall mat out on the concrete patio and teak pool deck sqs in other outdoor areas set up for my rabbits. So I knew one of these suggestions would work for you.
