Flooring Advice

I’m planning to expand Puck’s cage soon, and I’m not happy with the flooring he has now – I got the most textured vinyl I could find, but it’s clearly not traction-y enough. The bottom of his cage is ok, ’cause we’ve got a sheet down, but he has a shelf he thoroughly enjoys, and I don’t know how to cover that without the covering (whatever that may be) shifting all over the place every time he moves :/ How do I put traction-y materials down without them getting messed up to hell and not doing their job every time he moves, without gluing everything down? (He’s a chewer, and while he hasn’t chewed the sheet we put down – yet – I don’t want to risk him getting a mouthful of gluey nastiness)

 

My other half suggested cable ties, but I’m worried about the fabric ripping and either getting eaten (cue nightmarish image of long threads doing awful constrict-y things to his gut) or coming off with him if he binkies/500’s on or off it as he is prone to doing. I considered carpet, but again, not sure how to keep it in place (he doesn’t seem to chew our carpet really – a few signs of interest when we first got him, but nothing since) or fleece (he seems to like snuggling with me when I wrap up in my fleecy blanket in the morning).

Have you considered velcro? A lot of BBers use this to keep litterboxes in place, and it could work for this, as well. He’d have to use quite a lot of strength to rip it up, if it’s good velcro, which means that he probably wouldn’t do that.

Please please please be careful with synthetic material. Last weekend my bunny almost died from stasis and she only nibbled a tiny bit of polyester carpet. She survived with pain killers, lactulose and simethicone but treating her was stressful for her and the family. She passed the fibers mid-week, they were quite visible.
We will get her a.cotton, sisal or hemp rug to get binky traction.

That’s really scary drwil. I haven’t had problems w/ my buns chewing carpet. I tend to like carpet, myself. I punch little holes in it and use the cable ties to hold it in place, or I roll up duct tape and stick it under the rug and food dish so it doesn’t slide on the linoleum. Then I can take them out and scrub them when they need cleaning…which has been a LOT lately with my bun’s surgical recovery.

I suppose it all depends on what your bunny will go after. This is something to consider with velcro as well, though velcro has the added bonus of making itself inaccessible if there’s a litterbox over it.

Oh I keep the duct tape rolled up and under things. I think duct tape fixes everything, much to my husband’s dismay ha ha. Gotta put some right on the linoleum though to fix a big rip. (No wonder mine was so cheap). Gus was mad about taking his meds, reached down, grabbed the edge and PULLED. big tear in it now. Hubby was, like, ” that got damaged already?”

An observation on cable ties: I used them to put mesh around my new bunny’s cage because I was afraid the slats were too far apart and he’d get his head stuck.

I have now been cleaning up teeny tiny bits of chewed cable ties for weeks. And I bought the heavy duty nylon ones from the hardware store, not the cheap plastic from the dollar store. These were one step below industrial strength used in car repair, heavy equipment tie down, etc. I’m just praying he passes what he swallowed.

We better have a talk with that bunny! Then with mine…he ate part if the syringe I was giving him medicine from last night!
