Floor that is easy to clean up and has traction

I will be moving in 4-5 months so I will be able to change the floor. Right now I live in a townhouse so I cant. I am hoping to have a room in the basement where I can rip up the carpet. Would concrete be a easy to clean floor that the has traction for the rabbits? What other floor would be easy to clean and have traction?

Our bunnies are on concrete, pavers and carpet. The cement / concrete is good, but hope bunnies are toilet trained coz it stains when they wee on it

Would is smell though? I dont care about stains. My carpet looks terrible right now, lol. I would rather have concrete be stained then carpet. I just dont want it to smell.

Ours doesn’t really smell, but we use a hutch cleaner on it on e a week and hose it out, carpet and all (don’t worry, buns are in a different room getting treats when we do this). So ours stays really good, but I don’t know what it would be like if we didn’t hose it….

I find linoleum to be great for the bunnies. You can always buy linoleum remnant from Home Depot or Lowes. You won’t have to rip off the flooring underneath either. You can just place it on top. Accidents are pretty easy to clean as well.

I have never had trouble cleaning up potty accidents on concrete. I get no stains and no odor. I just wipe up any pee with pure vinegar. The concrete does have better traction than linoleum but concrete is not very healthy to lie down on as it retains moisture. If you decide to go with concrete just have other options for them to lounge on such as mats or even cardboard or you can provide shelves which is what I did.

I wanted to add that my basement concrete flooring is relatively new, smooth and not cracked or rough. Some concrete might absorb pigments and odor but a newer basement floor shouldn’t.

My basement concrete floor pulls the urine into it leaving white stain marks even after I clean them (Cleaned with Vinegar).
I use Lino because it’s easy to whipe off, and then toss old carpets down in areas. The carpets I purchase cheap off craigslist and stuff. They do get stinky and I eaither power wash them outside in the summer, or just toss and replace them.
I try and get lino that’s not to slipery if i can, just for added traction.

I didn’t care that much about the floor…. the other half on the other hand did LOL.
I think if I didn’t cover it, it’s be white eventually without me painting it :p

Whatever floor I get I will have a huge rug so they have something soft to lay on. When I move I will see what the condition of the concrete is under the carpet and I will use lino if its really bad.

 You can also choose to have smaller rugs so that you easily pick them up and do an overall sweep and clean.   In my other place I first put some thin padding down and then put sheet vinyl over it, (got a good, yet cheap remnant from a carpet/flooriing store)..(you don’t have to do the padding, but since Jack is a bigger boy, someone had recommended make it more “cushy” for him. 

 You just have to be careful that the bunnies can’t chew on the edges or pee over the edges of the linoleum or sheet vinyl).   VERY easy to clean, but Jack cannot and will not walk on slippery surfaces (even though we got a somewhat textured remnant).   So we purchased a bunch of those little carpet samples (rectangular) from the same carpet store.  Many of the carpet stores will have a pile of them that they sell for a dollar or two.  And those carpet squares or something similar could be also used on the concrete.   Because the carpet squares were easy enough to replace if they got too soiled or couldn’t be cleaned,  it really made things easier.

My old set-up is the one that has a custom pen in the kitchen and there is another member’s who has a really neat set-up in their basement (you’ll see trees painted on the walls) and she used smaller rugs as well. 

Jack did fine on the smaller rugs as he just jumped around on them, did binkies and played no problem.  It’s not like he “walks” anyway, so hopping from rug to rug was just natural for him.

our bun cages are where the dining room WOULD be if we had room in our condo,, but we’re content to eat sitting on the couch.

the floor is carpet, so underneath the entire length of our cages we have a 4x 12 foot sheet of smooth interior vinyl siding ($15-$20 at menards, it rolls and will fit in the back of any car) to catch any messes that might be kicked out of the cage. we then bend it up and againt the wall behind the cages to catch all the stuff kick out of the 2nd floor. you can also clean it really easily with a wipe.
for traction i find that using lots of folded overlapping blankets (felt throws) makes the interior super soft soft, yet still easy to pick one out at a time and shake it clean. just make sure you have half a dozen extra to replace in the cage while one round is being washed. it’s amazing what your dryer lint trap looks like on wash day…

We have a textured vinyl floor that looks like a wood floor. Rex loves it! He can binky away. I love it because it looks nice, was cheap (at Home Depot) and is easy to clean. Now, he’ll run around, but he does run uber fast on carpet. I’m not sure if he has more traction on the carpet and/or if he’s just excited to be free 😛 I took the photo below to ask about his rings around his eyes, but it’s a good shot of the floor too!

My last buns had a room with concrete and she loved it, especially in the summer (it’s very cool to the touch). Though her litter habits were awesome, so I didn’t have to deal with the messes.

I thought all vinly/linoleum would be slippery. I will have to look into that after I move. Im hoping that the cement will be in good condition because that would be free. I think they would have better litter habbits on a solid floor. I think they (or one of them. I dont know who is not litter trained) dont know the difference between carpet and litter. But I like the look of that vinyl floor that looks like wood and it would be cheap.

When I built my bunny condo, I had the same problem of finding something that has traction and is yet easy to clean..my Peppy loves tearing up/eating carpet so rugs are a definite no for her. In the end, I managed to find this roll of traction flooring stuff at Home Depot that works great. However, I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called…every time a question like this comes up, I scour the Home Depot site for the product…to no avail.  All I know is that it was sold in long approx. 2 ft wide rolls for use in garages/worksheds.

 

The “top” side of the flooring has these raised (about 2 mm?) ridges, but I was afraid that Peppy would gnaw on the rubbery material; plus, I thought the ridges might be too high for comfort if she stood on them a long time. The other side has some light texturing, so I opted to use it upside-down instead.

I will definitely look for that. I think I like that better than lino and cement. It looks easy for bunnies to run and binky on. You can just wipe that up if rabbits pee on it? How much did it cost?

Yea, it’s super easy to clean – just wipe up! It was in a big roll, sold by the foot…I think it was something like $2-$3/ft, but don’t quote me on that.  I just use it for Peppy’s cage, so I don’t know about running and binkying…I have a feeling they might still skid on it at high speeds, and of course it’s not as great as carpet for binkies, but it’s perfect for normal low-speed bun movements (hopping around and flopping and such).
