I’ve discovered there are fruit flies in the apartment  I found a few over Chacha’s litter box that I have my bedroom. I just got sprayed lysol at the flies and discarded the litter box. I’m in a little panic here … It is my stupid fault – I accidently forgot to discard a half eaten apple  I’m so mad at myself

I have to note that after I spray things, I am wiping it back down with soap and water, to get rid of the lysol smell. Ugh.. this is so frustrating

        Any advice?

We live in an area plagued with fruit flies. The local high school conducts genetics classes for the students where students modify the fruit fly DNA. Very cool, except at the conclusion of class they release them all in the community. I have found being vigilant about food sources is just fine at keeping them at bay. Their life span is very short, so starve a generation and they are gone. Remove all fruit and veg asap, and keep bread tightly closed. Remeber to immediately rinse drinking glasses with fruit juices in them, etc. They will all die out.

My dad has fruit underneath a glass cake holder, so it can’t be bothered. Ugh. I’m so mad with myself

Thank you I’m going on a cleaning craze now hehe.

I read on this forum a long time ago that someone was having trouble with fruit flies and they put a bowel of vinegar ( not sure if it was white vinegar or apple cider vinegar) and when my grandma had fruit flies she put a bowel of apple cider vinegar next to her fruit and within a few hours most were gone.

So the flies being attracted to the vinegar – they drowned to death?

That’s right Mocha, it’s apple cider vinegar. They’re attracted to the fruity smell and then they drowned. I use a dish of milk for my gnat problems all the time. Oh, and they do have very short lives. As long as you get rid of the food source, they’ll be gone before you know it.

*nod* Apple cider vinegar – some fruit flies can stand on the liquid though and won’t drown if they can escape, so you can add a drop of dish soap to it and it will stop them from being able to. You can also make home made fruit fly traps with a water bottle, or wine bottle and plastic wrap – put a bit of wine or vinegar in the bottom (or fruit juice) and wrap the top with plastic wrap, then poke a hole in the top. They will climb in but not be able to get back out.

Personally, both methods of home made traps were too slow for my liking last time I had fruit flies so I just bought one of the traps they sell at the grocery store. Were gone within a day.

I like fly catching tape, so I will be heading to the mall soon (they have Target and my former work place – which I hope has some fly catching tape) to buy some supplies >.> .. Ugh, not how I wanted to spend my day off!!

You all have been very helpful Thank you!

We get a few fruit flies too! Not alot, but they can sure be pesky and I have to watch our fruit as it ripens.

I hate fruit flies. I can’t leave any ripe fruit out because they start hovering. It’s weird how they just seem to spontaneously appear out of nowhere. If I notice fruit flies I just remove the attraction and they go away.

Just be careful that ChaCha doesn’t get a hold of a fly strip if it falls.

And yes, the expression is “you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Meaning, be sweet if you want something or someone. I always wondered, though, who wants flies???!!!

I know…..what IS with that??  I find that odd too!  It’s like they are hiding out at some fruit fly spy command central area or something.  Then you put fruit out, and bam, they appear.

Yep.. it feels like they are HIDING right outside your window or something.. and when they smel something sweet – BAM!!!!!!! XP

I am seeing less and less. I killed 3 in my bathroom last night (I even cleaned and bleached my bathroom..) and only saw one in the kitchen.

I don’t leave fruit out of the fridge anymore, every time I do it’s like … fruit fly central. I don’t even buy bananas anymore because it always comes with fruit flies and they are nasty if you put them in the fridge.
