First vet appointment- nervous mommy.

Missy has her first vet appointment this coming Wed and I want to make sure I have a good list of things to ask her vet. I got her vet from the House Rabbit Society vet page, but I want to make sure he knows his stuff because my baby Jack died from a vet that wasn’t as knowledgable about bunnies as he should have been. Here’s the list of questions I have so far:

For him I want to ask: How long has he worked with rabbits? What is his success rate with spaying/neutering? How many rabbits does he see in a month? How does he do spaying/neutering? What kind of medicines does he use?

Then the things I want to go over for her check up are:

Make sure that Missy is a misses, lol.

How old does he think she is.

Check her eyes and her teeth.

Ask him if he will show me the best way to clip her nails.

Ask about any shots or things she needs to have done to stay healthy.

Talk about spaying and when should she have it done.

I don’t want to be rude or seem like I’m telling him how to do his job or anything, but the vet that took care of Jack didn’t know enough about rabbits and it cost Jack his little life. So now I’m just overly paranoid that Missy gets the best treatment she can. Any feedback or suggestions of what all I should ask would be awesome

To add to that, I specifically asked mine about antibiotics as well, whether he recommended fasting before surgery for buns. House rabbit society has the list of antibiotics that are toxic.

I asked the vet I had gotten Bud fixed at how to prevent hairballs and she had to look it up on the computer. Never took him back there…

Also I just wanna say, I was looking at the pictures on your profile…Missy is so CUTE! And she looks much happier with you!

Thanks guys! She is absolutely adorable and completely spoiled to boot. She is so good though. She took to litter training amazingly well and really doesn’t chew too awfully bad. I’ve really only had a couple problems with her leaving poops outside her cage. I can’t help but brag on her, lol.

A good thing to consider doing is having some bloodwork done. My vet did that before Wilbur was spayed just to check for anything that could cause complications. It’s also good just to get a baseline of your rabbit’s health.

Good luck at the vet. I hope you find him knowledgeable and that Missy gets a clean bill of health.

I also had a bunny die from a vet who knew nothing about rabbits. Very awful to go through that.
