Hello everyone! I’m rescuing two rabbits from a crowded situation. I’ve never had rabbits before, so I’ve been doing loads of research online! But I also wonder if anyone out there has any other helpful tips or suggestions for a first time bunny owner. Thanks!

Welcome! Thanks for helping out these rabbits.
There’s alot of info on the web that’s a bit suspect and can get overwhelming. This site bases it’s info on the House Rabbit Society info and is super friendly. (I’m a personal fan) HRS site is a winner too http://www.rabbit.org

When will you get the rabbits and what age & sex are they?

Welcome Marco!! Thanks for choosing to rescue!!

I guess my first tip would be to be careful about where the info comes from-some sites have very old information that isn’t good-such as giving them all pellets to eat (ie. no hay or veggies), treating hairballs with petromalt and feeding bread as a treat. Rabbit husbandry is advancing and new standards for rabbit care are better and better.

This site is fantastic for rabbit information (and as you go along you’ll likely have specific questions etc. and you can ask them here ) and another I’d highly recommend is http://www.rabbit.org -the house rabbit society.

Would love to see pictures when you get a chance!!

Ok, since you’ve been doing alot of research, likely your head is swimming with info soooo…
I’ll offer some 1st step tips.

Get a quite area ready in your home. Somewhere not to hot, and away from other pets. Just to get them accustomed to the new space. Provide hay and water bowls and sipper bottle too. They may prefer one or the other. Bunny proof the area – ie, make sure they can’t chew cords or anything unsafe or get behind areas that are unsafe. Your best bet is to set up a pen or cages.

Do you have a carrier or 2 to transport them home?  How long a trip are you looking at?

Try bring some of the feed they currently eat home with you (Changing their diet suddenly may cause some stomach upsets) and anything that will make their new space more familiar to them.

Get them home and let them b e to accustomise to the new space. Then please, check in here again!

                Thanks for the link!

I’m getting them on Wednesday, and they’re male rabbits a bit over 1 year old whom have bonded.

Yes, I have a large cat carrier to take them home in! The ride home would only be a half hour or so. The woman who owns them way says she’ll give me some of their food also! I’ll definitely do an update once I have them and get a picture out here!
