Hi everyone! I just got my first bunny over the weekend, and I’m looking for a place where I can get advice, and questions answered

Can anyone point me towards an affordable place to get my little girl spayed? The only vet in town that is in the yellow pages wants 450$ for the procedure, plus a 65$ appointment beforehand. I love my bunny, but I can’t afford half a grand to get her fixed.

Welcome and congratulations on your new bunny.

Where do you live? That might help with finding you a rabbit experienced affordable vet.

Oops! A location would help, wouldn’t it, haha.

I live in Bethlehem, pennsylvania. I’ve called 2 other vets who claim to take care of rabbits and all seem to have similarly high prices

Are you close to Pittsburgh or Oreland, PA? There are rabbit rescues in both those cities.

                Also Harrisburg, PA.

Both Oreland, PA and Harrisburg are about an hour/hour and a half drive from me. Pittsburgh is about 6 hours, so I’m thinking that may not work. Do rescues offer low cost spaying/neutering?

The local humane society only offers low cost options for dogs and cats, they pointed me towards two vets who still charged really high prices. I never knew it was so expensive in our area!

The rescues don’t offer low cost spay/neuter but they can refer you to a vet that does usually. They would be a great resource for you.

This has an email for the chapter manager and I would email her to get some recommendations as well for spaying your bunny – might save you some legwork on the phone (or not)…but it’s worth trying her first.

Wonderful suggestion, I just emailed the chapter manager, along with their health and care contacts. Hopefully they can reduce some of the phone work.

                                  welcome to binkybunny, BTW!!

just make sure you find a TRULY Rabbit Savvy vet, tho. Sometimes they say they are Rabbit Savvy and sound knowledgable but in reality they’re not. go with your instincts too…

                                  Good luck researching.

Well, I contacted one of the vets that my parents use for their rat colony a few towns over. Its a full animal hospital where they have doctors specializing in everything from amphibians to large livestock. Its one of the lower prices places, plus they informed me that I can set up time payments to cover the procedure. Its also one of the places reccomended by both the humane society and the House rabbit society, plus the local house rabbit society chapter.

Still more expensive than I’d hoped, but I kinda adore my bunny, and would rather pay some extra cash over time to ensure she’s healthy and happy.

The price is staggering hey? I figured it’d be less then a hundred-I was shocked!!

Kudos for being so repsonsible and getting it done!

i think you my be better off doing an hour or two drive, as the prices tend to be lower when there is more competition not necessarily that they dont know as much or whatever, if i drive into the city it was about £20 cheaper than round here.

I had the same problem, the only vet in town that did spays was over $450 and he kept cancelling because of his arthritic hands. The rabbit rescue in Dallas gave me the name of the vet they used and it was only $160, and that included 5 days of pain meds.

It was a 2 hour drive, but I left early in the morning to miss traffic, checked her in and then napped and read in the car the rest of the day. I could have hung out in the office waiting room, but it wasn’t made for sleeping….lol. They left me come in and sit with her in recovery and to check on her. About 4pm I met with Dr. Effie who went over her care and I left for Waco.

It was a long day, but I feel she was in much better hands and she healed without any problems. I was worried about the long drive so soon after surgery, but Pringles just slept through it and it didn’t seem to affect her.

                                          Good luck in your search!
