Fire at Safe Harbor Animal Shelter, FL

This morning, Friday, Safe Harbor Animal Shelter, a no-kill facility in Jupiter (North Palm Beach County) had a fire in the front of their building. The morning news showed that by now the fire department had put it out, with most of the animals outside the building being treated as needed. They didn’t have bunnies at the moment, dogs and cats, but 14 cats died. It was before it opened so the director and staff were not there at the time. They are heartbroken, with about 2 dozen volunteers already on the scene and a tent set up in the parking lot to receive donations. Blankets, food, and money were asked for. Now the reporters say that they mostly need money since they operate entirely on a donations basis. They are also an animal hospital, so have animals being treated with medications etc. as well. They have a board set up on the sidewalk for people to sign on for immediate adoptions. Fortunately, though they do not yet know what caused it, the fire was contained to the front of the building and did not spread. It looks like they may be able to get back in. They moved 38 cages outside, so those animals that are OK are in them already. They showed a fireman holding a small dog and giving him oxygen.

Their website sad they were doing a makeover, and the Director said on the news that they had some rewiring work going on, so it’s possible that it caused the fire. I’ve never been there (it’s about 30 miles from my home) but they are well thought of in the community. Anyway, I thought I’d mention it since many of you work at or with shelters and know more about what they need immediately. Thanks.

Update: On the 5PM news they said that hundreds of local volunteers showed up to help. So much dog & cat food, blankets, litter and bedding has been dropped off that they are waiting for a storage container to arrive to put it into. They have had over $90,000 donated just today. By the way, at least 38 animals did survive, with a human chain from the door to the parking lot passing the animals along to safety and treatment.

People really do care about animals when the need is broadcast. I wish we had a shelter closer to here for bunnies.

Sad, very sad those poor kitties. But at least most of them made it out OK. So glad to hear that the community really pulled together and it sounds like they are going to be O.K.
