I’m going to need to find a vet that is closer to our new home after we move in.  I’m just trying to be prepared.  Here are my questions.

        1. What questions do I need to ask them?  The one we use now was recommened to me by the shelter.  Here is a statement on the website of the one I was considering.  It kind of incouraged me.

“Providing proper medical care for rabbits and small mammals requires specialized training and skills. We employ staff veterinarians who possess experience in the care and treatment of rabbits and small mammals. Our staff veterinarians can advise you as to the dietary, maintenance, hygiene and medical needs of your furry friend.”

They even put a bio on about the vet that works with small animals.

Dr. Rossebo graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 1991 with Dr. Biese and Dr. Laritson! He worked in the Milwaukee area prior to coming to Kaukauna in 1998. In practice, he enjoys small animal medicine, dentistry, and will care for all sorts of pocket pets such as rodents, rabbits, and ferrets to name a few.
He and his wife Kirsten live in Appleton with their daughter Annika, who was born in February, 2001 and their son Mateo, who was adopted from Guatemala in December, 2004 at the age of 5 months. They also share their home with two dogs, a cat, and a guinea pig.                                Outside of work his hobbies include hiking, bird watching, snowboarding, music, and environmental issues.

        2.  I know I’ll need to have Hugo’s records transfered.  Is there anything else I need to do, ask or know?

        Thanks for the help.

The first question I always ask is: “If my bun needs surgery for anything, how long do I need to fast them for?”

If they answer anything other than “Don’t make them fast” then keep searching

“How often do you see rabbits during the week?”

To be honest, I’d be thrilled to read that write up for any vets where I live. The very fact that is says “rabbits and other small mammals requires specialized training” seems very promising to me!

Sounds great. There are additional questions you can ask at the link Jersey posted. I would ask some very specific questions in your case regarding Hugo’s recent medical history.

Also ask your current vet if he/she has any recommendations. They may not, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
