Fighting on first meeting

I have a 7 month old neutered male and a 5 month old un-neutered female. I have had the male for a couple of months and the female for about a week now. Everyday they spend time in their runs which are joined so they spend all day able to touch each other and have never showed any signs of aggression and sleep next to each other either side of the bars.

Her personality is a bit snooty, kind of fancy, really not interested in people. He is more energetic and likes people more. He also spends ages grooming this little rabbit toy that he has and lays next to it.

Today we decided to give them a very quick go at meeting without bars to see how it would go. For the first minute they hopped around, she cleaned her face, he sniffed her back but in general they ignored each other.

Then he was going near her more and putting his head under her, at which point she started to nip his side and then they both started nipping and they started kicking and it got a bit more vicious and turned into a bit of a fight. I separated them (harder than I thought it would be as they are both small and can slip out of hands easily).

I just want to know – if they fight like this on the first time of meeting, within the first 5 minutes of meeting, is it a very bad sign?

It is very normal for an unspayed female to be aggressive. I strongly recommend you have her spayed and given time for her hormones to settle down (several weeks at least) before attempting any more bonding. They could really injure each other.
