Hi, ok I was cleaning the bunnies litter boxes and I found a whiteish, yellowish pasty substance in the corner. It was really weird.

So I cleaned it out and I think it was Fern because later thistle peed in the litterbox and it was normal…

What do you do for bladder sludge? Is there a home remady or do I have to take Fern to the vet to have her bladder flushed out? Fern is not a big water drinker, how could I get her to drink more water?

        What could have caused this?

        What should I do?

I think I might watch Fern for a while to make sure that the pasey thing was not soap or something that got into the litterbox (I was cleaning it in the bathroom).

Is there any other signs I should look for if she has bladder sludge? She is eating fine.

The only way you are going to know is to take her to the vet for an exam. They can usually express the bladder and see if it’s sludge and they can do an x-ray.

My rabbit with bladder sludge postures when she urinates and she also gets urine scald.

You may not even see a sludgy type urine if your rabbit has bladder sludge because they cannot express the sludge themselves.

            This might help: http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-5/bladder-disease.html

Also this: If you notice chalky calcium deposits in the litterbox… Rabbit urine is typically mineral-rich, so the presence of calcium in the urine should not be interpreted as the only indicator of bladder sludge or stones, but thatis not to say that it isn’t a concern. Rabbits, like all mammals, need calcium in their diets and some of it will be eliminated in the urine, and rabbits’ urine is rich in minerals from their diet. Seeing calcium or chalky buildup in the litterbox doesn’t necessarily mean there is any build-up of calcium in the urinary tract. You should observe your bunny when he/she is in the litterbox, and watch for signs of straining, struggling or discomfort. Also check what’s left behind (if you can) to see if it looks normal. If the rabbit is showing any signs of calcium buildup in any form, then it’s time to talk to the vet, and perhaps get an x-ray of the bladder (calcium shows up very nicely in x-rays). From here: http://www.3bunnies.org/litterbox_training.htm The “bladder sludge or stones” links takes you to another areticle on the 3bunnies site that seemed to be helpful.

I don’t have any personal experience with bunnies with bladder sludge/stones or UTIs, so I can’t do any more than send you those links and send some (((healthy vibes))) to you and your bun!  Still, I’d recommend taking your bun to the vet, if you can.

Jack who had a huge stone, never strained or seemed uncomfortable in the litterbox. He would typically have more white sludgy stuff than my other bunnies throughout the years, but not all the time – normally when he ate kale or calcium rich things. And though it is true that that noticing some whitish residue in the urine doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem as most rabbits do excrete excess calcium, I agree it’s very important to keep a close eye on this and talk to your vet.

Mops’ urine was the consistency of toothpaste sometimes when he was younger. I had him checked for this, but the vet found nothing wrong. After he started living with Lint, he began drinking more and I never noticed the pasty urine again.

(…ok, I just read back what I wrote and it kind of sounds like I’m saying Mops became an alcoholic because of Lint…)
