Hello! I’m new here so I hope I’m posting this in the correct category! Anyways, on to my bunny dilemma. So, I have two rabbits, a male and a female and both are unaltered (no I do not plan on breeding them, they’re only unaltered because I planned on showing them). Chester is about 7 month I’d say and Annabelle around 6. Lately, when I’ve been having them out to play, Annabelle has been mounting and humping Chester from both the back and front. Chester used to occasionally mount her when I first got them (with me promptly stepping in and separating them) but now it’s the total opposite happening. In fact he sometimes seems almost scared of her, either that or he just takes it or runs away. Whenever she mounts him she grabs a tuft of his hair and the only way I’m able to get her off is by scruffing her. I feel really bad but it’s the only way of seperating them. Whenever she mounts him his hair seems to wet too, and when I look at her genital area it’s wet. The breeder I got her from told me she was a girl and I checked myself and she looked female to me as well. Though I did read something that concerned me a bit by saying that sometimes male rabbits can retract their testicles when they’re scared. I thought it would be rather easy to sex them since they’re both unaltered. Chester I know for sure is a male since I’ve seen his testicles but Annabelle I’m not so sure now… do you think ‘she’ could have retracted them? I’m so confused! She used to be such a sweet and docile little girl but now she just seems way more sex-deprived and skittish. As soon as she sees him she wants to mount. Also, it may be worth noting that when she has her little ‘mounting episodes’ and when I pull her off of him she just lies down with her rump and tail in the air as if she’s, you know, ‘presenting herself’. She also growled one time when I pulled her off. Anyhow, sorry for this long essay I’m just really confused at this point. It’s like they swapped personalities or something haha. I miss when they used to just cuddle with each other. Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You rabbits are hitting puberty so separate them asap unless you want babies. They could also fight so you nees to be careful.

So first off you shouldn’t really have them together. Two unaltered bunnies can definitely breed even if you try to intervene, one day you can wake up and there’s babies! Also, they’re hitting puberty and hormones are raging so it can be really dangerous. Just because the girl is the “aggressive” one doesn’t mean she might be male. My rabbits are fixed and bonded and the female is the dominant one. Mounting is how they assert dominance and the female is constantly mounting the male, especially when they were first together. But, since you rabbits are not fixed, they have full hormones going on and it’s very probable that they will fight and get hurt. So basically, keep them apart or get them fixed.
