Female bunny making honking/whimpering sound

I’ve had my female bunny for about 6 months. Last week I got a male. I went through the steps to introduce them to each other properly. Yesterday was the first time they met face to face. Everything seemed great! They played, cuddled, etc. My male did mount her several times but she didn’t seem at all bothered. She was excited to play with him. Then, this morning I went to let her out so she could see him (they are caged separately) and she started doing this weird noise I’ve never heard from her before, a combination of a honking and a whimpering. Every site I’ve looked at says the honking sound is a happy noise, but they say the whimpering is an unhappy noise. Since it sounds like she’s doing both, I’m at a total loss about what she’s feeling. She isn’t spayed. Neither is he. I’m his 3rd owner and I was told he was neutered by the first owner, but discovered now that he’s actually not. Does anyone know how to explain her noises? She didn’t want to come out of her cage at first (but eventually did and is now bouncing around the room happily). I’m too nervous to let him out with her, because I don’t know if she is afraid of him or not since I can’t tell if she’s making happy noises or scared noises.

These are the noises of a hormonal female and she is probably wondering how she can get to her new boyfriend. Since you said he mounted her during their interaction, it could be too late anyway. She may be pregnant already.

You’ll need to separate them. It would be a good idea to have the boy neutered ASAP. Girl bunny… you can either wait a month to see if she has babies or you can see if your vet will do an emergency spay. Either way, they will both need to be spayed and neutered in order for them to form a true bond in the future.

Also if you notice that the sound occurs when the male and female interact and she is trying to get away from the male or if the female knows the male is going to attempt to mount they can make a whimping type noise that indicates that they dont want to be mounted by the male anymore. This can idicate they are a little stressed by it. Both my females that i have bonded to the same male have made this sound at one point through the bonding phase, coupled with trying to moce away from by boy because he is an obbsessive mounter. I usually stopping him mounting when the females make this noise.
