hello everyone about three days ago i took in a rabbit because her owners decided they no longer want her they literally put her in the tiniest wire cage you could ever see with a small wooden thingy so that her pee and poop wouldn’t reach the floor and a sign that said “my owners don’t want me you can take me for free” it was heartbreaking really, i’m not an expert when it comes to rabbits but she does look fairly young there’s no way she’s older than 5 months she’s a lionhead today i took her to the vet to make sure she doesn’t have any kind of diseases considering she will be sharing a room with my rabbit (different cages tho just the same room) the vet said she has foot mites (??) and gave her two shots and said to come after 10 days, does anyone know how to deal with foot mites i don’t want my rabbit to get infected and i don’t understand how she can have “foot mites” which looked severe btw yet everything else from ears to fur looks perfectly healthy /: also my parents don’t know about her cause i’ve been doing a good job of hiding her whenever they want to enter my room so if you guys wanna help me come up with an excuse please do lol, thanks in advance <3

Thank you for taking this bun in!

Are you sure the vet didn’t say fur mites? Fur mites can infest feet, but they’re more commonly seen on the nape of the neck/upper back of the rabbit. It looks like dandruff. These mites are very common in rabbits. Practically all rabbits carry a few of them from when they are little babies, but it’s when the bun gets stressed out for some reason that the mites can begin to multiply and become a problem. The shots the vet gave her were probably ivermectin. That’s very good, because ivermectin has effect on several parasites a bunny can get.

I’d keep her quarantined for 10 days. Wash your hands between touching the rabbits.

I don’t have any good tips about excuses. Your parents should be very proud of you, though. You saw a defenseless animal being maltreated, and you stepped in. You took the bun to a vet and I’m assuming you payed for the visit yourself. That’s just SO great of you.

I wonder if it could be sore hocks? If it’s only sore patches on her feet? I wonder why the vet would call it foot mites though, so perhaps not. Is your vet a rabbit specialist? If she was living in a wire bottom cage full of her own mess, sore hocks would be quite likely

Anyway, thank you for rescuing her and taking her to the vet. You’re a good person!

Never heard of foot mites but fur mites are a common problem with bunnies.

You are wonderful for taking in this bunny. I think you have to be honest with your parents. Talk to them and try to come up with a plan that will involve you paying at least part of her care.

hello everyone thanks for the lovely messages !

i’ll probably come clean to my parents just to make things easier both for me and the lovely bunny who i decided to name luna, everything’s going great and she seems to be having a very good time she’s extremely playful and loves jumping although luna and my rabbit seem to be having trouble accepting each other, now about the mites i agree with everyone else i have never heard of such a thing as feet mites but luna doesn’t seem to have any signs of fur mites either i checked her nape, neck and ears everything’s completely healthy apart from her feet i also don’t think they’re sore hocks because the toes are affected as well and i don’t think sore hocks can affect toes but thank you everyone for your lovely responses and advice, let’s hope my parents don’t scold me for lying about luna and keeping her hidden lol!

I’m glad she’s doing well. Luna is a great name

When you introduce two rabbits to each other, it’s quite a difficult process and you need to bond them. Sadly, you can’t just expect them to accept each other.

Is your other rabbit a girl too?

Generally, it’s good to have both rabbits spayed/neutered, then spend some time getting them used to each others scents, before introducing them in a neutral space. If you need some help getting them to be friends, then post in the bonding forum and we’ll be able to help you along the journey

For now though, I recommend you keep them separated, not least because of the possible mites.

Mange mite can cause some scaliness and fur loss around the toes. But im not certain how common it is to only show there. You’d likely see some other areas on the body.
Other possibilities would be a local fungal or bacterial infection, furloss from urine scald (though you’d expect to see more loss on base of her feet also) or, her having pulled out the fur from her feet herself if living in stressful environment.

Thank you for taking her in and getting her seen. I hope your parents will be on board with you keeping her. If not, well she is still in a better situation then she was and maybe you can find her a suitable home. The last owners obviously didn’t do that much for her.
