Hello. I’ve been trying for so long to find a feeding syringe that I can use with critical care. I have purchased so many different types from many different places (local feed stores, online places like walmart). I have also gotten them from the local pharmacy. Nothing has worked for me for critical care; it gunks up inside of it, or by the time I get it thinned/watered out enough, it just falls right out. I do have some fine grind papaya blend now, so hopefully it won’t be as difficult…

I am wondering if anyone has any specific syringe they purchase, that is sort of tried and tested for them, that they use for critical care. If you’d be willing to share the brand of the syringe or even better yet the exact product page for where you purchase it, I’d be so appreciative. Thank you so much in advance for any info. I realize I can do things like ask a vet if they have any syringes, but I live so far from a vet and most basic stores/resources, so I am dependent upon knowing a sort of exact product that I can purchase online regularly. Whenever I ask the vet they just give some general ideas like get a curved tip syringe and cut the tip off of it, but nothing specific. (by the way I did try doing those, but when I cut the tips off it became so jagged I could tell it was hurting my bunny 🙁 ) This is why I’m just looking for any exact syringe that someone uses, something that doesn’t need to be modified, something that they know for certain works that I can  buy some.

I’ve never had problems with any plastic feeding syringe. Even 1ml ones I don’t have issues stuffing critical care though I usually use a tiny bit larger like 5;  I have dwarf buns so i don’t like the big ones. No tips needed.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong then. Because I can’t get it to feed out of any syringe I’ve purchased, I’ve had both 1ml and 5ml ones.

Some people have better luck with small syringes, others have better luck with large syringes. I have an old meat injector syringe that I used. I just took the needle out of it.

How are you filling the syringes? I load them from the back, rather than trying to suck up the CC. If you are using a larger syringe (like 6 – 10 mL), use a spoon to push the food into the back of the syringe (I aim for pancake batter consistency). If you are using 1 mL syringes, use a larger syringe to fill them from the back.

For larger syringes, I use these (regular tip), they were given to me by my vet: https://www.vitalitymedical.com/kendall-monoject-softpack-luer-lock-syringes.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiApb2bBhDYARIsAChHC9uyGptdpSmNKnmQ9LhasLEyLL80osn45ySX-1buiu2uwSJM26bFwFcaAv27EALw_wcB

For small ones, I use ones that look like these (I think they are standard 1 mL syringes): https://www.vitalitymedical.com/bd-tuberculin-syringe-only.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiApb2bBhDYARIsAChHC9tCwyGcVoYI5TY17pWGa3EbeC3R8SRJMqFGq9eJhi6yn-BRQ6bgHLsaAtGDEALw_wcB

thanks so much guys. and thank you for the recommendations, i will absolutely check these out. those 6 ml monoject syrings looks like they might work good. i have tried filling from the back. what happened with the syringes i had, is that the cc gets gunked/caught up, and i’ll press and nothing will come out, then all of a sudden a large amount just explodes out of the end into the bunny’s mouth which is awful for her. we tried so many different kinds and various sizes. i’m trying to prep now and get some good syringes so i don’t end up in the position i was in over the summer where she had GI stasis and i just could not get the critical care into her properly. these 6 mls look like they might be great because the tip end is a bit wider. have you used those much?

LBJ so interesting about the meat injector syringe, would never even think of that. i think i might remember you suggesting this actually a few months ago.

Yes, I’m the weirdo with the meat injector syringe. LOL  It is a larger syringe, so it really just depends on your preferences. I liked it because the seal for the plunger was really good on it and it was easier to load.

I used those 6 mL ones for most syringe feeding until recently when I started using the 1 mL ones.
