I am new to bunny ownership (meaning my buns are new to owning me!) and was wondering when the diet list says to feed foods high in vitamin A one a day, does that mean they can only have foods high in vit. A just 1 serving or can I give more foods in one feeding that are high in vit. A?

Can vitamin A be bad for buns if they are given in too high of abundance?

        Thank you.

I’m pretty much *clueless* about vit A…sorry…

I just had to chime in here for:

i sent Dana Krempels an email earlier today about this. we get this question a lot, and i’m not sure if we’ve really been able to come up with anything conclusive, or if we have, i can’t find it thru the “search” function. at times, i do feed more than two vitamin A veggies, sometimes for several days in a row, depending on what i buy. so i am waiting with baited breath to hear back…

Under Binky Bunny’s veggie list it states to feed at least one veggie a day that has vitamin a and she bolded the veggies that are high in vitamin a.

I must have missed the “at least” part! So, feeding a salad of turnip, mustard, collard and dandelion greens all in one day is ok then, right?

I also own reptiles and they are fed these very same greens daily so I always have them on hand. I haven’t seen poop problems yet and they still eat their pellets and hay with no problem. I just didn’t want to hurt them by feeding them the wrong thing.

okay… here is the response from Dana Krempels…  i love how quickly she responds!

It would be pretty much impossible to overdose a rabbit on Vitamin A with only fresh vegetables.  The quantities in the plants are far too low to ever be concentrated enough to cause a problem.

Only by using synthetically produced vitamin supplements containing high concentrations vitamin A could you possibly overdose the bunny.  So don’t worry at all about too many vitamins in the fresh food.  They will never cause a problem.

so this should hopefully clear up any confusion.

welcome here by the way! how many buns do you have, and what kind of “reptiles”?

you might want to try changing the greens up sometimes tho too.  there are so many things that are great for bunnies.  they get unlimited timothy hay and limited pellets each day too, right?

                            Thank you Beka27!

I have 2 bunnies. One is a male, he is a lionhead/dutch cross and he’s 7 mos old. My other bun is a female, she is a britannia petite and she is 2 years old. They’re both altered and have recently bonded. They do get unlimited timothy hay and I’ve just now cut Joey back on his pellets. But I’m rather confused on how much to give them.

I have 2 bearded dragons and 1 green iguana.

I’m always looking for new greens so I’ll make sure to take the list with me the next time I go shopping! Which should be today….my iguana eats me out of house and home!!!!

that’s quite a house you’ve got there!  lol!

here is the page for the BinkyBunny diet section.  binkybunny.com/Default.aspx

you can also find it under the bunny info link at the top of the page.

your 7 month old boy can be restricted to about a 1/2 cup pellets per day.  your girl can probably be down to 1/8-1/4 cup depending on her weight.  the general rule is a 1/4 cup for 5 lbs of bunny, but that does vary.  they should both be on timothy based pellets (without any seeds or cereal pieces).  if your boy was on alfalfa-based before 7 months, he can be weaned off of it now.  when you limit the pellets, they will end up eating more hay, which is better for their digestive system.

i have a copy of the veggies list i keep in my purse, just so i don’t forget.  anything new that you introduce, do it carefully over about a week so you can make sure it does not upset their tummies.

i had an iguana when i was younger.  after a couple years i ended up having to surrender him to a sanctuary.  he was getting big (like they do) and i was completely prepared to keep him and build a gigantic enclosure, the whole nine yards.  i was looking forward to it, but my parents vetoed the idea and there wasn’t much i could do, living in their house and all.  i did love that guy tho!

if you want to share some pics of your crew, we’d love to see them!
