Horrible day today. Just the morning really, but it’s spoiled my whole day.
When I left for work this morning (still dark) I ran over one of the neighbour’s cats I was hardly going at any speed because I’d just left our house and there were cars parked both sides that I was squeezing between. The cat ran out from under one of them and I braked but it didn’t matter. I quickly turned around to shine my lights on the area but couldn’t find the cat. Then I ran home bawling my eyes out to get my husband and we both came out with a torch but couldn’t find it near the road anywhere, and you can’t really go walking down people’s driveways with a torch at 5am.
I’ve run over wild animals accidentally before (always sad) but it was nothing like this, knowing that some person is going to be devastated when their cat comes home severely injured, or even worse, not at all.
I just got home from work and had another look in the daylight, thought I found the cat for a moment but it got up and walked quite comfortably. Just been checking some lost pet pages too but it may be a bit early for some people to post about it. Trouble is I don’t really know what it looked it. I just got the impression of a light, possibly white coloured cat, but then there was some ginger or light brown type fur on the road. So I’m really not sure, was just out of the corner of my eye for a split second.
I feel like the worst person in the world

This is why I’ll never have anything but an indoor cat.

What a horrible situation Azerane. You couldn’t have done anything in this situation: an accident is an accident.
It’s very commendable that you checked to find the cat, even twice. It’s a tragic situation, but I hope you’ll feel better soon knowing that it wasn’t your fault, and that you really did your best to help the cat.

Friends of mine lost their cat as well this week, also by car accident.
Sadly this is the risk people take when they let their cats out. No matter how careful a driver is, if a cat suddenly pops up out of nowhere it’s bound to be hit.

Aww, I’m sorry Azerane. Are you sure you actually hit the cat? Perhaps you felt something else and the kitty got away? Either way, please don’t beat yourself up too much. You did SO much more than a lot of people would. I’ve seen people actually speed up to try to hit cats and other animals. Anyway, sometimes these things just aren’t avoidable since animal can dart out at just the right time and there’s no time to react.

Thanks everyone, unfortunately there is no doubt at all that I hit the cat, I’m sad to say it went right under the front wheel, which is why I’m even more worried than if I’d just bumped it. We found some fur scraped onto the road too. Very hard to stop thinking about.

Az, as a true animal lover you went above and beyond to try and help the cat. That’s so much better than what some people do.

My friends’ cat was hit and flung into the bushes besides two parking spots. It had to be a person who threw the cat, because he couldn’t have gotten there himself in his state. If it wasn’t for their neighbour who spotted him, they’d still be looking.

So I’d say: person with a spot of bad luck, yes, awful person, definitely not! There’s a rich variety of @$$holes out there (see above), and I’ll vouch you’re not one of them.

A quick search of free ones has come up with one called Wondershare Filmora. I’ve no idea what it’s like, but seems to be somewhat well regarded. I’d watch some youtube vids on it and read reviews etc. I ended up buying Pinnacle because I couldn’t find anything free when I looked, but I didn’t see the Wondershare one.

Az – I completely sympathize with you for this morning’s accident – and if it were me I’d be out walking and looking left and right at every possible moment trying to find pussy cat – but unfortunately cats have a way of playing very effective games of hide-and-seek

It is of course very possible and probable that he/she was ‘just’ injured, has found his/her way home and is being treated.

I watch a lot of ‘reality’ vet programs on tv and very often people go with a cat who has ‘come home injured, hit by a vehicle’.
I think if it had been worse you would have seen ‘evidence’ and been able to find the cat not far…

So try not to feel worse than you already do. (( hugs ))

I had an appointment with my unemployment officer today, because my reintegration programme ended without success. It also happens that I’ve been pretty badly for the last weeks, and that I’m walking with a limp. I walked into the office, and he was shocked. “You look awful! Why didn’t you stay at home?!” My reaction: “It’s a lot better than yesterday.” *blink blink stare* from the other side of the table… So, finally someone at the unemployment office got the message that I’m actually chronically ill, and I might not be faking it after all, at least that’s a bonus.

He said that he now realised that my health has deteriorated over the last 2 years. However he warned me against getting a new examination by an official government doctor too soon. They look unfavourably upon people with “invisible illnesses”. Some of his (obviously ill) clients lost their disability payments after an examination because the doctor said “I can’t explain this medically.”.
Luckily my unemployment officer really wants to work with me (pun intended). He said: “I can understand that your illness is erratic sometimes and that it scares off employers. If a paid job isn’t in it at the moment, we could always go for volunteering or something like that.” Whew, at least someone understands…

These appointments always leave me dead tired, I have to explain again and again that I’m not faking this, and my income is always on the line. As soon as I came home I flopped on the couch with a blanky, and Breintje was there instantly

The origins are unknown, but the main problem is chronic muscle overtension. It’s unknown whether the muscle problems are neurological, auto-immune, hormonal or something else. This chronic overtension puts a lot of strain on joints and tendons, which become stiff and very sore on touch. Most people with my condition have wide-spread pain in more than 11 joints. It leads to complete fatigue, the kind that most people will recognise during a heavy flu. The pain and stiffness leads to sleep problems, limited motion of joints, problems with concentration and loss of muscle strength. The reason why it’s so invisble is because the severity differs each day. Some days I’m relatively well, while at other days I can’t even leave the house. That’s the main issue: people don’t see you at your worst, so they assume it’s all baloney.

My condition doesn’t cause inflammation and deformity directly (like RA), but it does make you more prone to inflammation because the tissue is already under stress. There are no medications yet, except muscle relaxants and pain killers. The main side effects of the medication are drowsyness and dizzyness, so it’s something I try to avoid as much as I can. What helps is warmth, very gentle exercise, positive distractions and rest.

Prognosis for my condition is “use it or lose it”: loss of functionality can be held off as long as possible with proper physical therapy and trying to stay active. I have hot water therapy weekly and I exercise at home whenever I can. In the meantime I try to eat well, get enough sleep and try to eliminate stress factors. I found some great hobbies which I can do even on the worst days: being creative with all kinds of materials (and hugging a bun ^_^).

My sister has fibromyalgia. She too is on disability. She was finally able to get it under control enough to work part time, but stress causes attacks and she’s miserable for days.

She takes a vitamin called DHEA for the pain and says it helps quite a bit.

That was one of the suggestions for what was/is wrong with me. I haven’t had too much of a problem recently though so I doubt that’s what it really was. For awhile there I would have these episodes of muscle fatigue and weakness (Jell-o legs). Plus I had what I would describe as pinched nerve pain in my shoulder and arm. Cognitive dysfuction, etc. You name it. I had MRIs, blood tests, all sorts of tests. They never gave me a diagnosis. Then I suddenly got better. This isn’t to say I won’t ever have another episode or “flare” though.

Ellie, have you heard much about MTHFR gene mutations? The gene is responsible for forming an enzyme, but for those with the gene mutation (up to 40% of the population!), the enzyme is not “correct” and it doesn’t function properly. It basically to do with our bodies way of utilising folate and is supposedly linked to a lot of conditions, including fibromyalgia.

@BrunosMama: sorry to hear about your sis. Work-life balance is indeed vital with people with fibro. I’ve worked part-time too in the past and I’m itching to do something again. Stress is a huge trigger indeed, but it sometimes is self-fulfilling. Being ill can stress you out really badly, and stress makes your illness worse. Not an easy spiral to get out of, so kudos to her for being at work again!

@Oakley: sorry to hear that. Yes it’s tough for people with diseases like ours. Luckily acceptance is (slowly) moving in, although the name fibromyalgia triggers really strange ideas with some people. I’ve heard it being described by people as “too lazy to work-disease”, and those were the people who were still being somewhat civil in the discussion.

@LBJ10: Odd symptoms, and it’s really frustrating when they can’t find anything. I wouldn’t say fibro at first glance when I hear those symptoms, but it can manifest really strangely in some people. Hope the symptoms will stay away, fingers crossed!

@Sarah: Aww, that’s so cute of Peanut. This week will be over before you know it, and you can hug the bunnies again.
Yes, it’s really frustrating to have to explain yourself at every occasion. Sometimes more tiring than your illness itself.

Yesterday evening was totally crazy. There was a knock on my door at 20:30, and all the neighbours were in the hallway. People were milling about in a panic, some in their pyjamas and my next-door neighbour in her bathrobe, still dripping wet with a towel in her hair.

Turns out that there was a burglary at the end of the hallway, the door was brute-forced by ripping out the entire lock. The house was ransacked and a lot of stuff was stolen. Luckily the tenant wasn’t home, because a lot of violence was used. The police said that it was the work of routine criminals. Odd thing is: we barely heard a thing and we were home the whole time

My neighbours boyfriend saw two strange people wandering through the hallway, and when he told the police their descriptions they had a match. Some of the stolen stuff was found in a nearby park, she has some of it back. The thieves haven’t been caught yet, according to the police they’re junkies. Hope they’ll be caught soon.

I changed my locks last year after a burglary attempt in my house, and (being the pack-rat that I am) I still had the old lock and keys. The police asked me to lend them to her until the locks were fixed. In the meantime we have set up a Whatsapp neighbourhood watch, keeping track of suspicious activity around the building.

The upside to the whole situation is that all the neighbours met eachother yesterday, and we talked for over an hour. We’ll all stay in touch more often, and that can only improve the atmosphere in the neighbourhood. I found out that the new girl has a bun, so we already have something to talk about. I promised to watch her house a bit closer, hope that it’ll help her to recover sooner after this horrible experience.

Ellie – It all dates back to a trip to Costa Rica. The symptoms developed after a jellyfish sting. I saw a zillion doctors, neurologists, etc. They could never tell me if it was caused by the sting, if it was triggered by it, or if it was completely unrelated and just a coincidence. For awhile there (and this was many years after the trip), I didn’t think I would be able to finish my masters thesis because of it. =\ But it mysteriously just comes and goes. I haven’t had too much trouble the last couple of years.

Jersey – That gene sounds very interesting. I’ll have to read the stuff you linked to.

I know! Plug your phone into the USB port in your computer and your computer will tell you what to do. It’s really simple!

Reese, that used to work with my old android phone, but the iphone just won’t cooperate. I guess I’m either supposed to buy a Mac computer or a new iphone or both.

I have all pics backed up on Flickr and I’ve maxed out iCloud and Dropbox, so I guess I don’t really need the pix on a USB stick as well, only I like backing stuff up =) It’s probably a form of separation anxiety =D

Im glad you are not afflicted by it as much now. Its bizarre and must be frustrating when no one can give a diagnosis.

Re the gene stuff, I emailed you about it some time ago but maybe I stuffed up. The service was a bit glitchy when using my phone but I’ve noticed it’s improved lately. : )

Im sort of both interested and skeptical with the information on that gene. Lol. But since “treatment” is nutritional really, I don’t see the harm.

Thanks everyone for the tips on MTHFR, I’ve been reading up on it last night. MTHFR mutation is a real mutation related to schizophrenia, dementia and miscarriages, but that’s where the science ends so far.

Pseudoscience goes a bit further and claims it is a cause for many unexplained diseases, however it doesn’t offer any real scientifically accurate research. It’s mostly featured on naturopathic websites, where the general tone of voice is: “Feeling ill, but regular doctors can’t help you? Of course they can’t, because they only believe in their science. It’s tempting to try and find any solution when your life is made miserable by illness, but unproven therapies can be very dangerous. Vienna – Wool sucking is actually pretty common. It doesn’t necessarily have to be wool either, but fibers that have that texture. My parents’ cat would suck on slipper socks. I can’t describe the material. It almost looked like pipe cleaners woven together.

Cali. The white with black. Not the black with white . Cali? Callie? Cally? (She responds so it must be something like that)

Should be called wool shredding !
Some say it is due to being weened too soon (absolutely kittens should be with mum until 12 wks minimum).
Some say it touches 90% persian type cats.
Some say it’s the equivalent of children sucking thumbs through stressful times. A comfort blanket type thing (no pun intended… groan).

The strange thing is I have seen them both change behaviours in the past 48hrs. Cali is def top cat. Jess seems more withdrawn. Cali even climbed slowly on top of a laying Jess earlier (on my bed with me in the room!) and put her jaws around the back of Jess’s neck. I still can’t work out whether it was in a mother cat/kitten kinda way or if it was an attack manoeuvre…. as i stopped it as soon as i saw it (Jess didnt think much of it either…..) They have little hissing spats maybe once a day but nothing aggressive really, and then they can pass close by each other without being bothered. I even woke in the night to Jess licking Cali…. a first!

So all that to say I don’t know why Cali has started this now….

Everyone’s a little on edge here, after that burglary. We all agreed to take a look more often if we hear strange noises. There was quite a racket in the hallway this afternoon, so I went to take a look.
Turns out that there was a rather clumsy window washer at work, he was trying to jostle a ladder outside. As soon as he was outside he forgot that the doors were still on “lock”, locking himself out in the cold. He was very happy that someone had come to investigate ^_^

Once a month the Rescue have an “Adoption Show” where foster families bring their cats together (to a garden centre or other quietish shopping place), grouped together so people can see all the cats at the same time (25 max) rather than going around all the foster homes based just on a photo.

It’s a Cat Rescue but they don’t have kennels, all cats are in placed in foster families (like Cali…. )

I’ve just spoken to the adoption organiser on the phone and asked to have another couple of weeks with Cali-Strainer-Drainer so she and Jess can work out their hierarchy and also so I can check the strangle-grab doesn’t become a habit…

She said yes of course I can

Zou rarely does binkies now, but if she’s already sitting up and Henry does one near her, she immediately does one afterwards and then Henry does a second! Like two people jumping on a trampoline

However, I have a problem and it’s getting worse, I need your help

Henry is now close to obsessional about digging in the litter trays.

He woke me up at 3am doing it. It is constant.

I have put them outside today, not the best weather but it’s to stop him continuously digging. I’ve tried a dig box with rolled up bits of newspaper in their cage, but it is used a litter box.

And even when they are let out in freeroam, Henry often goes back to the litter boxes in the cage and digs (in both)

He will dig and chew fluffies to shreds…

I ‘think’ it’s since there’s no paper in the trays, and just pellets…. but they’re so goooooood

Any ideas?

Super worried, woke up to the air conditioner on but not blowing out any air. I’ve turned it off for a bit until I go to work to try and rest it. But I really hope it’s not broken because it’s going to be 41C again today and the bunnies (and Dory) need that air. Not sure what’s wrong with it though, it was still on and acting like it was blowing air but nothing was coming through the vents.

I’ve told hubby what he needs to do if it’s not working to keep the buns cool. I’ll be worrying the whole time I’m at work though. I might need to make arrangements for after work to take them somewhere else if it’s bad.

Oh, no, Az! I know how stressful that is – in summer I’m always terrified we’ll have an outage when I’m not home and poor Chewie will melt
Usually air but no cold means your compressor’s working but there’s a problem with the freon…

Well there wasn’t any air at all. The air con was running (it’s evaporative so was pumping water etc), but I’m pretty sure the fan belt is busted or the fan itself has burned out. It’s pretty warm in here though and we haven’t reached the hottest part of the day yet.

Hubby put a wet towel on the bunners cage with a fan while I was at work. When I got home the house was warmer than I expected (the lounge room where all the pets are gets all the morning sun until mid-afternoon). I happen to have a digital thermometer and it’s reading 32.5 which is a bit scary for the bunnies. When I got home I messaged my sister-in-law about borrowing some fans so now we have a 2nd pedestal and a 2nd desk fan. I have the two desk fans set up for the bunnies with 3 wet towels, they had an ice pack but ignored it for cuddling with each other…. Then the pedestal is set up further back in the lounge room with more wet towels hanging in front of that and that air is reaching Dory’s cage. I’ve sprayed Dory with a spray bottle, and I dampened the buns’ ears too although I should do them again. All things considered they’re looking ok, they look warm and bothered, but not like they’re overheating or anything. Faster breathing and lots of lounging around, though no scary panting or wet noses/mouths or anything. I’ve decided I’m going to break Luna’s diet too and they’re going to get some of the cold romaine from the fridge, I’m sure they could use it, messy cecals or not.

Worst case scenario, since I can’t take them to my brother’s, if they’re looking like they’re not coping, I’ll just drive take them to my work in the bigger travel cage I have and we’ll sit up in the office in the air con.

I can’t imagine how hot that is Azerane, but it sounds horrible for the buns. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to bring them to work with you, if they’re willing to help out. Hopefully it can be fixed soon.

Breintje decided to be a total a-hole this morning. Going everywhere that wasn’t allowed and not listening, tearing up my grocery bags as I was unpacking them. I don’t know what got into him, normally he’s super friendly and caring if I have a bad day. We got into a bit of a fight, the last one was two years ago

The physio did some rough work on my back, so I’m feeling all bruised. It doesn’t help that I haven’t slept more than 6 hours a night last week.

Breintje made fun of me by doing naughty stuff, not listening to “NO!” and running and hopping away when I wanted to chase him into his cage. I couldn’t bend over to pick him up, so I ended up chasing him with my gripping tool on a stick. A few gentle prods in the rear, and he suddenly developed some respect for the thing and went into his cage.

He made quite a racket there, but calmed down eventually. I gave him half an hour to contemplate his sins, and now that I let him out he’s suddenly super cuddly and laying next to me on the couch. Silly beast…

Well it wasn’t pleasant but managed to survive yesterday. Thank goodness for a friend of mine who i mentioned our problem to and she borrowed a portable air con from her parents to lend to us. We only got it at 10pm, it wasn’t until 11:30pm that the room was bearable to sleep in, and not to mention it’s noisy as anything. But it’s better than the 36°C it still was at that time. And we can use it to keep the room a little bit cooler today. I’m sure the pets will be happy.

Wasn’t worried about that I can laugh at it as well now, but oh dear… I really wasn’t happy with him when I got home and he started acting up. In Dutch we’d say: I could just glue you behind the wallpaper! Charming way of making annoying kids/pets disappear for a while, were it not for the ugly moving lumps on your wall.

Today made me wonder though: do rabbits challenge you for dominance, like dogs occasionally do?

You guys would laugh if you could see our setup. Because we borrowed a portable cooler from a friend’s parents, we’ve had to rearrange the loungeroom. Because the cooler needs window access for the exhaust, we had to move two lounge chairs, then we had to block up the window screen with cardboard and tape so the hot air exhausting didn’t get drawn back into the house. Our lounge room also has two door ways and the cooler isn’t strong enough to cool such a large area so both doorways are blocked with hanging sheets held up by makeshift rods so that we don’t damage the paint with tape. That keeps the cool air in the lounge which is at least 5 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Not to mention the 3 fans, wet towels for the buns and the camp chair hubby has for a foot rest because we only have one chair big enough to sleep on.

It’s quite the elaborate setup Buns did better today with the portable air con going as is to be expected. It’s still warm inside but much better than yesterday.

Awww, poor Zeke! Next time that happens, give him tiny pieces of bread with peanut butter to chew on. That’s a common remedy for a chilli accident. Capsaïcin doesn’t dissolve in water, but in fats. That’s why it burns so long: it attaches to the fat in your skin. A bit of peanut butter on the bread will bind it. This works for humans too, although milk works faster. But milk is not so good for buns.

I used to be very shy myself and I like shy nerdy guys. My soon-to-be-boyfriend hung around me a lot at the LARP club, always teasing me. After a couple of weeks I decided that I was interested, so I just asked him: want to get a couple of drinks at the campus bar after this LARP day? After a couple of drinks he asked me if I wanted to see his bunny, and I followed him home… to see his bunny. I thought he was hinting at something else, but it turns out he was a really sweet innocent soul

I’m currently making plans to build a large flower/butterfly garden (around 3/4 of an acre). Mine are pretty much identical in size with 9 holes per side, your bunnies are pretty much horses anyway so the size is fine Did you count the step grids and the ones supporting the level? 62 grids. The levels ones aren’t needed, but I do find it gives good structural integrity. Yes, sooooo many cable ties, my hand was nearly dead after tightening them all.

Website says Epoxy metal, does that mean it’s coated? Grey is ok though, I would use black cable ties on it. I cringe every time I see a black C&C cage with white cable ties. Don’t remember how many I used, at least 300, probably close to 500. I think I paid $24,90AU for same 16 grid amount when I bought mine. They’ve gone up $15 since then.

Moxie, it sounds so nice with a butterfly garden! We get lots of butterflies because we have copious amounts of oregano and also several butterfly bushes. Butterfly bushes are great because if you have one, you can multiply it with cuttings. They take quite willingly, you only have to stick them into the earth. But you might have to cover the lower parts during winter since you seem to get really cold winters.

Bam, I definitely plan on planting butterfly bushes! There aren’t going to be too many flowers/places to plant flowers I’ll be able to plant, because ducks “root”, especially when it’s wet. They’d just tear up a flower bed. So it’s probably going to be more of flower bushes, that type of thing I also know somebody who’s big on gardening and needs to get rid of some of her lilac bushes this spring, so I plan on having a few of those. I’m so excited!

Moxie – why not just sprinkle wildflower seeds? You’d let them sprout and grow up, of course, before the ducks were in there. Lots of native plants are capable to taking abuse once established. I love gayfeather and tiger swallowtails love it too. Thistle is a great butterfly plant, as well as butterfly milkweed. If you like smaller butterflies, asters are awesome too.

We looked at bunnies today. The Humane Society here had an unusually large number. Three Dutch, 1 lionhead, and 1 fuzzy lop. They also had 2 chinchillas and a guinea pig. We were there a week ago and they had no small animals. Oh… and there was a little piggy!!! I wanted to hug her and take her home, but you can’t have them in the city. They were adopting her out to “out of town” people only.

Better today than yesterday, thanks, though have had a stinking headache all day, probably in reaction to yesterday. The headache might not be all bad, as the way I’m feeling, I’d probably end up looking to see if there are bunnies wanting adopting, or cute baby guineas at the petshop I adopted Mini and Snickers from if I left the house, and I really can’t afford any more…  my will power would be at rock bottom ….

Azerane – I did like one of the dutch bunnies. He was so sweet. But, OMG, who doesn’t want a little pig? She was so freaking cute! She was full grown (almost 2 years old) and she only weighed 35lbs.

Moxie – Holy moly that a lot of snow! We are experiencing one of the driest February’s on record. Very little snow all winter and it seems spring is here. It’s been in the 50s and it’s supposed to be 70 on Friday.

I posted my process in photos on a thread in the Rabbits Online forum at the time. I’m not sure if the photos will show for you if you’re not a member though. Let me know. I think for me the most important step was getting the grid alignment right before joining anything. My grids weren’t perfectly square, some had slightly uneven sides so I spent an age laying out each side panel onto the floor, making sure that the grids lined up well. I think that helped with it being sturdy, as well as having the second level completely supported by grids to give it that complete rigidity across the depth and length of the cage.

I’ve been seeing some posts on facebook lately with bunny Easter goodies. There’s one from a store near me that has so much beautiful stuff, and I have to be very controlled. Grids on amazon France are 44€ for 24 panels. UK same price…. So not excessive for a big condo (compared to wooden hutches) but not cheap either seeing as i’ll need 2 ou 3 packs.
And it’s aaaaaalways more frustrating when you KNOW there is cheaper somewhere else !! my mission in life is to get the best offer from these online theives !

So, yes, 45 euros for 80 panels is a bloomin BARGAIN – and I’ve just had the order confirmation through !! so I’ll be going on Saturday (unless I take tmw PM off work )

So i’ll be needing a pack of ???? 80×4… cable ties ? I’ll wait to see the colour of the panels before I buy. Just in case.

I used 150×3.6mm cable ties, I’d buy a pack of 500 80mm is probably better length wise since you cut most of it off anyway, just for me if I went down a size in legnth, they were also thinner which I didn’t want.

I’ve just had a peep and YES, I can see everything, photos and text. i’ll get a cuppa later and settle down to read….

Another person on another forum (Marleys cage!) said if they did anything different they would have put the base strips (to prevent poops being flung outside the cage) INSIDE the cage (easier for cleaning) rather than outside (esthetically nicer)…

Does this mean I should buy enough to do inside and outside…. ? I also want to put wheels on the bottom….

I have timber edging around the outside of the bottom of my cage. It’s not very tall, but I wanted it to hold the cage in and add sturdiness to the base (I suppose that would have worked inside too), it being outside means it can only be chewed if the bunnies are outside the cage, not inside (where they’d be more inclined to). The only issue having the edging outside on the base level, is I find that hay gets stuck between the bars and the edging. It’s not a big deal, but it happens, a quick sweep won’t get it out and occasionally I have to spend a little longer on it. I only have coreflute on the corner where the litter tray and hay basket is. That’s also on the outside, I didn’t want it inside being chewed, plastic really isn’t suitable for that I don’t have any edging on the top level, but I wish I did because poops just sometimes roll off and end up in never never land behind the cage

I seriously considered adding wheels, but I’m a person that hates spiders and things and I just knew that if I was a bit lax with cleaning out under the cage that it might end up being a nice spider haven. So I prefer to have my cage on the floor (it actually sits on top of foam mats so the screws for the edging don’t scratch the floor).

It’s good to be always learning

And I can move my cage about, just not as easily as if it was on wheels, haha. It’s really not terribly heavy, just awkward due to its size. I also still haven’t added the extra grid height onto the second level even though I’ve had the grids for ages. It’s just such a big job. I can add second floor edging, that’s just a big job too unless I add it on the outside which I might just do on the back, but don’t really want that on the front. If I want to add the edging to the actual floor surface, I have to take the entire lid off the condo to get the level out.

I think the main thing I did different to Mopsy’s condo is that in the corners where the grids meet, I made an X with the cable ties over the corners. So joining the grids on a diagonal (except at the door hinge etc.)

We just love the change in Breintjes character over the years. He’ll be 5 in august now, and dwarfs can be so hyperactive and skittish, bolting at every noise. Bas prefers cheeky, active and playful buns, I prefer snugglebuns. Breintje can still be very active and playful with toys, but he’s finally calming down to become more and more of a couch potato. He actually manages to sit still for more than 15 minutes nowadays. Bas and I watched two films this week, and Breintje joined us for a while during both evenings. We made one big cuddle-pile, and it lasted for at least 20 minutes at a time. Love it! ^_^

We were watching “Suicide Squad” on thursday, it was *meh*, to put it politely. I’ve never been an big fan of Will Smith’s acting, but Margot Robbie really shined as Harley Quinn.
Yesterday we watched “Doctor Strange”, and we both really enjoyed it. Cleverly made, visually great, a few questions unanswered but highly recommended

During dinner we mostly watch “Avatar the Last Airbender”, “The Grand Tour” or anything with David Attenborough. Bas is a very slow eater and watching something actually helps him to eat. Also gives me something to do while I wait
He seems to have some issues with swallowing food, especially in the morning. He never used to eat anything before 13:00, but nowadays I’ve “gently coached” him to have breakfast. We found that he can keep down a smoothie, some thin yoghurt or some dilute porridge. Better and healthier than nothing at least.

I felt awful this morning. I don’t normally sleep late, even on my days off I usually get up around 7, sometimes 8 on a late morning. But I must have been tired last night and I slept till 10:30, and when I got up, the bunnies didn’t have a single strand of hay left. But at least I know the fussy things do eat the tougher strands that they usually through aside, lol.

I could but not sure how long would have to wait until see something like that again. Theyve both used box today and nothing suspicious looking there. They don’t normally pee up on the level where I found this blood, but I left a seagrass mat up there all week and they decided to pee on that. Theyve chewed a bit of foam I stuck on the ramp for traction also. I wonder if that could affect the urine? It’s only been there a short time.

Barrett, no injuries that Ive found and nails all intact so not from that either, These 2 have been bonded for a number of years and Ive never seem fight. But never say never with rabbits!

Im 99% certain this is blood in urine but I’ll show the vet the photo to get their thoughts.

Gooseman is not looking great due to huge moult but I think he may still have low level mite infestation. He had a round of ivermectin injections at vet at the end of the year. Im not convinced it’s cleared up and was going to do Revolution. The mite are an indicator to me that his immune system is not operating as best it could be. He’s also still snuffly and weight never picked up again after his treatment for the face abscess. I think it more then likely that latest concern (the blood) is something to do with him.

I was a bad person today. We have a little extra money this fortnight, so I may have taken the liberty of driving to the store with those gorgeous bunny plates that I linked to a little way back and bought them Although I must say, I was extremely controlled. They had two big displays of bunny/Easter things most of which were gorgeous, and I only bought the two plates I intended to buy. 

Having said that, I had to stop at Target for new undies Fact of life, deal with it. And they may have had bunny pyjamas! So I bought those too, lol I am not normally an impulse buyer, because that’s exactly how you end up not being able to afford to pay bills etc, haha. But I just couldn’t help myself.

Nice! Im a little bit jelly about your purchases Azerane. I had seen some very cute baby/toddler pjs with bunnies recently at Target. I hadn’t ventured into the adult section. Easter is a good time for bunny themed gear.

Okay, brief update post vet visit. Somebunny (pretty sure it was Mishy Moosh because thats her MO) pee’d in the carrier so vet tested that pee for blood and it was fine. He palpitated Gooseys bladder and said the bladder wall felt thicker. So this is a sign of inflammation. So he is on baytril now for cystitis. He was pretty good after vet visit and readily accepted banana chip as peace offering. He’s a Pro with vet visits. Potamus took longer to calm down and come around. So Im still in her bad books.
There are several factors as to why he might have developed cystitis but I’ll make a new thread for him so Im not taking over the Chat thread! Will probably do that after work. My head in mushy at the moment with some stress. Probably a bit from all this but also with Mums health. So I’ll come back BB later to give better update on The Gooseman.

Yesterday I was sitting with my daughter talking about Halsey, my last bunny before Patton. The girls- especially Mayu and Jasmine- love to hear stories about him, whose life barely overlapped them.

We talked about how all my bridge bunnies are up in Heaven running and playing and having fun, and how someday, we would all be together again.

And then it occurred to me- if I wind up in a place where Winston, Chester, Halsey and Patton are all together…

What if I have trouble bonding them????

Luna will be 3 years old in a couple months, so we decided it was time to take the plunge and set up a pre-op spay appointment for Wednesday. Last summer I cycled to one of the nearby farms that grows beets, to ask if they had beet greens for him. I got home with a large bag, and then remembered that there had been a VHD2 warning for that area. The area around the farm is also populated by a lot of wild buns. We go on walks sometimes to look at them. I called my vet for advice and she said: throw it all away immediately and clean everything it’s been in contact with!

I don’t usually make trips just for the bunnies, but I do greens shopping once a week at a farmer’s market. On a regular week the spend is about 40/60% human food/bunny and parrot food. On a parrot food prep weekend I can spend $30 and only $5 will be on human food, the other $25 is for parrot food, lol. She really does eat better than we do. No to mention the hours of prep time, but it’s worth it. This week I made 60 days worth of parrot food (just breakfast food). So I don’t have to make any more until mid April

lol, Ellie, I had to laugh at your story I certainly understand the concern though. To be honest, buying greens from a supermarket etc, you don’t always know where they’ve come from and what the wild rabbits are like in that area etc. Just another risk I suppose.

I’m currently over paranoid about Apollo. I groom both him and Luna outside, due to my husband’s allergies. There’s enough fur and hay dust flying around inside without brushing them inside as well. So despite the viruses etc, I do take them outside to brush them. 1/2 hour tops, they’re on a table and I have my hands on them the whole time to shoo away insects. At one point today, a fly landed right on Apollo’s eye. Of course now my heart is broken because I’m completely convinced that he’s going to get ill and die But I have to look at reality and think about the odds of that one single fly being a carrier, are probably very slim. Still, I am mad at myself about it, I might have to find a better solution for grooming time because it’s just too risky.

The danger was never super high in our area, but it can’t hurt to be careful.
I was on my way home from the farm when I passed the field where the rabbits usually are. And then it popped into my mind: wait a sec… if my bun likes beet greens, so will they. Better check with the vet about the VHD status.

It does protect against mosquitoes, but if I was going to spend time in the malaria-belt of Africa I’d choose sth sturdier + impregnated with permethrin. 

I also have curtains LILL over the outdoors runs as mosquito netting. They work.

We’ve had IKEA here since the dawn of times, so most of my furniture come from other places. But stuff like mosquito nets, kitchen utensils, (and indispensable IKEA doll bed) I get at IKEA. The nearest one is just like 7 km from where I live.

I bought lots of mosquito netting last summer, both for the outdoors runs and for my kale (needs to be grown under netting or cabbage moths and caterpillars devour it), that’s how come I know where to get lots of netting

I think IKEA has been in my city for 11 years, I’ve been once, lol. Can’t decide if it’s worth the trip or if I should just go elsewhere and pay more. I have some time to think about it at least, bunnies won’t need to be brushed for at least a few days yet.

I remember having a mosquito net over my bed as a kid, it was great because I was always getting bitten, but I also hated it. Because often when I woke up, there would be a spider on it, just hanging out over the top of me… not the best thing to wake up to when you’re a kid who’s terrified of spiders.

IKEA can be exhausting. The mere thought of it often exhausts me. So i only go when I know exactly what I’m getting. Last time we went it was early in the day so we had brunch there. They have very nice brunch.

I have to say for the curtains LILL though, they proved very resistant to weather. Some stuff doesn’t cope with lots of sunshine, it degrades the fabric, but I had the nets over the kale-plants from May to October and then I took them home to wash them for use next season. Which will be soooooon!!!! (I hope. It almost feels almost spring-ish here now. The birds have started to sing.)

Well that’s all six buns had their first RHD2 jab. Vet was lovely, gave them all a medical check and charged me £144 for all six. He said all my buns had really nice natures, and this while he was examining Jenny! He has also done them a prescription each for Panacur, but I will have to pick them up later, as they didn’t have enough in and will need to order more. Which isn’t a big problem, as they need to wait a week from these jabs before starting their 9 days treatment anyway. That’ll be more money, but prevention is definitely better than cure and they are outside a lot.

Hear hear !! Me too !!  I thought I’d won the lottery when I discovered the short-cut through from the top of the entrance stairs straight down to the downstairs !!

I went there for the bag distributor slash hay rack this weekend, I felt i’d been on a hike by the time I got to the check out. I was convinced it would have been ‘downstairs’ with gadgets and utensils…. noooo, the lady sent me back upstairs (contre flow of traffic !   arrrggghhh!)  to the kitchens…. but I have it now – you can be sure the buns won’t appreciate it !!! (and at 2euros for one, I bought 2, just in case !! )

Actually, making people “lost” in their stores is part of their strategy. The path through the store is nearly as long it can be, with loads of twists so you get turned around. Walking through the store slowly makes you more prone to impulse-buying, because you see things which you normally weren’t looking for. Whenever we need something from IKEA we always do some quick research online, and go in&out as soon as we can.

Supermarkets change their lay-outs every now and then for the same reason: your usual routine is disrupted and you’ll have to walk past items which you normally would skip.

When I lived in San Diego, there was a nearby IKEA. Here in Virginia, the nearest one is an hour away, close to Washington DC. I used to shop there a lot in San Diego. Haven’t been back since I moved. I now stay in a much more rural location. I prefer to online shop, or go to the nearest big city 35 minutes away, and avoid the 5-lane highway… and avoid DC… We have a few local shops. Walmart came to town in 2010, We got a tropical smoothie and a starbucks last year, as well as a petco and a few clothing shops and a shoe shop. This year we are getting a Lowes, and a Tractor Supply. I’ll never need to leave my little rural area again except to watch a movie! We have a few decent eating options, but date nights are still out of town.

Has anyone ever called petco and heard the nice slogon? “Petco – where the pets go”. Being South African living in America, I think the lady in the voice recording pronounces her words very well. When I first heard it over the phone – my boyfriend got to hear me repeating it and imitating her about a thousand times.

144 GBP is a good price for 6 buns =) It’s what it’d cost here for 3 buns. Bam is due in April for the RVHD2 and in March for the Myxo-RHD, which is just as well since there has to be at least 2 weeks between those anyway.

Gina and Podge are due their myxo/vhd early June, so that works out fine, and Pippi too, as he is due in Dec, but Jenny, Mini and Snickers are all due their myxo/vhd in mid August, just when their next vhd2 is due, so they’ll have to have their myxo/vhd early…

Everybun is speaking to me again now, I recon they are all pretending this morning never happened

I meant the vaccine. The vaccine alone costs 45 GBP for 1 bun here, without an exam.

The Myxo-RHD is available at mass-vaccinations every year at several local rabbit associations at a lower price for owners with multiple buns. Otherwise so many buns would go unvaccinated.

Noting what is due when on the calendar, with myxo/rhd every 12 months, rhd2 every six months and Panacur every three months, and time needed between things. First dose of Panacur is due to start a week today, which will be 1st March. Three months later is 1st June, meaning the second dose would finish on 9th June, but Podge and Gina are due their myxo/vhd on the 8th and 9th of June, and the vet said there needs to be a week in between. So do I book in for their myxo/vhd early, and start the 2nd dose of Panacur late? I don’t want to leave the myxo/vhd over a year between doses.

I would give the mxyo/vhd early. I always booked Bandit in for the cylap 10-11 months after having it done, rather than 12 monthly. Early is better than delaying it in my opinion.

That’s my feeling too. Though last year, I took Gina in exactly 11 months after her first jab, and the vet almost refused to do the second one early. He did in the end, but said if I bought her in under 12 months next time, he would refuse to do it, and there is no way of knowing which vet you’ll see. Yesterday’s vet was really good with the buns and gave them all a free health check before the rhd2 jab. So taking her in early will be a gamble that I won’t see that vet again If for whatever reason, the vet decides not to give a jab, the apt is charged as a consultation, which both cost the same, £30, and I really don’t want to pay twice.

Everybun is fine this morning, though poor Podge’s poops are all really misshapen for the first time in months. not sure if that’s in reaction to the jab itself or the stress of the trip to the vets. Hopefully they’ll improve over the next few days. Everybunny is going to have a quiet indoor day. The UK is on storm warning today, so nobunny would have been out anyway.

Yes, paying that fee twice is really odd. Is it so bad for buns to get all the shots at once? We may have to call our vet and start saving up.

Storm warning for NL too, but we’re practically neighbours. The railway company found an excuse again to cancel a lot of trains. “If something goes wrong we can adapt quicker.” Um, yes sure… So you create delays and a commute from hell because sometime somewhere there may be a tree branch over the tracks?

We are collectively done with these panicky “preventative measures”. Strong winds and storms are a common occurrence here because we’re a coast country. Cancelling all kinds of facilities because of a stiff breeze is rather unnecessary. Many people are quoting the proverb “It’s a storm in a glass of water”, AKA: much ado about nothing.

Yay, it turns out that I have great neighbours! I’ve been more or less housebound for the last 6 weeks, because my SI joint is acting up. Walking is painful and difficult, biking is completely out of the question. I had wanted to ask Bas to do the shopping, but he left for his parents’ house earlier than I expected. I asked friends if they wanted to get some items for me, but none of them were home for the weekend. Embarrassed I asked some of my neighbours in our Whatsapp-group, and many of them offered to help.
Breintje is very happy with this, because we were out of hay. He’s been munching at his hay rack for the past 30 minutes, and my fridge is stocked again for the weekend. So sweet! ^_^

I actually think over-vaccination is worse than waiting a bit longer. Vaccinations are a big challenge for the immune system. A well-vaccinated bun (a bun that gets vaccinated yearly) should have antibodies to last them some extra days. Probably quite a bit longer than that. You don’t have to wait two weeks before you let the bun out unless it’s the very first time your bun has had the vaccine, I asked my vet about that last year when Bam had his shot.

Aw man it’s so embarrassing to ask favours from people you barely know. Most of them have seen me limping down the hallway once or twice, so they know something is up. In general city dwellers in NL don’t have a lot of contact with our neighbours, because we’re so packed together. It’s a crowded country, and privacy is rare but valued highly. It’s different in villages, but in cities the general attitude is: the best neighbours are the ones who never bother you. Being active in making contact may soon earn you the title of “nosy neighbour”. I’m very awkward with people I don’t know well, so that doesn’t help with intiating contact. One of my neighbours thinks I’m a creep, he told me he was afraid of me. Don’t know what on earth I did, but I guess this proves there are still weirder people than I am…

Crazy tip, but use nose spray with Xylometazoline (saline solution will not work for this!). Sometimes the Eustachian tube can become blocked, and then the pressure on the ear can’t be regulated properly. Hurts like hell and it is a sharp pain

If you inhale the spray through your nose the membranes in your nose and throat will slink a bit, and this may be just enough to get things open.

Really random question guys. I know I’m trying to be healthy but……Does anyone know when Girl scout cookies are supposed to be delivered? I ordered 2 boxes like 5 weeks ago and I really want some Girl Scout cookies ha ha

I suppose it depends on when the troop gets around the delivering them. They are currently selling them in front of grocery stores, etc. here. I don’t know anyone with kids in girl scouts anymore so I didn’t have anyone asking to take orders.

This has been a hard month guys! I’d love to get some girl scout cookies Although I can’t really complain, I got a package from home with portuguese cookies. Nom nom nom!

Why this has been a hard month: the science centre I work at had it’s official reopening mid month, so there was a lot of work that went into it. I’m working part time on what is supposedly a full time job (I’ll transition after I graduate); I had to chase down my committee to get signatures on paperwork for my thesis; several snowstorms; I have corrections on a paper due on March 1st and my thesis due the following week… I’m surprised I got any sleep and haven’t been eating everything I can see out of stress!

Ellie, it sounds like you have really lovely neighbors!

I actually think over-vaccination is worse than waiting a bit longer. Vaccinations are a big challenge for the immune system. A well-vaccinated bun (a bun that gets vaccinated yearly) should have antibodies to last them some extra days. Probably quite a bit longer than that. You don’t have to wait two weeks before you let the bun out unless it’s the very first time your bun has had the vaccine, I asked my vet about that last year when Bam had his shot.

That’s actually a good point bam, though interestingly enough with both the RHDV2 here now, and the K5 strain being released in a week, our Veterinary association is actually recommending off-label 6-monthly vaccinations with cylap. They did testing with K5 and cylap, but only for one month. I can only assume that it would remain effective. If six monthly, my pair are due in April I believe, I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet.

*sigh* I’m home from work today. I’m pretty sure I have laryngitis again. I don’t know why I keep getting it every year now. I never used to. I’m hoping I’m not too contagious, but I’ve read conflicting information online.

I wasn’t doing too bad until last night. I had a swollen throat and ear pain starting Thursday evening. Still a swollen and itchy throat Friday, Saturday, and most of the day Sunday. No other symptoms. Then finally, last night, my throat started feeling really raw. I took a bunch of stuff before I went to bed, but I woke up at 4am with a painful throat. It would hurt when I swallowed, but I would also have this uncontrollable urge to gag. Ugh, I hate this. I’m going to the doctor later, but I know they can’t really do anything.

Jersey – No, I haven’t every tried it. I’m sure they sell it at the health food/supplement store. The problem with laryngitis is that all that soothing stuff never reaches the inflamed area since the larynx lies below the epiglottis. Breathing in humid air seems to be the only thing that actually moistens the affected area.

I’m going to the doctor in about 45 minutes. They’ll probably do a strep test, which I hate. They always come back negative. I think I might have some immunity to strep since I had scarlet fever when I was a kid.

Something that I thought of: in some countries antibiotics are sold over-the-counter. It’s best to not self-administer them unless a doctor prescribed which ones to use and how long the treatment should last. Infections in the upper respiratory tract (throat, larynx), are often caused by viruses. AB’s will not help in this case, because they only work against bacteria. They may weaken your immune system instead by damaging the gut flora.

Many people here in NL seem to think that AB’s help against flu, colds or sore throats, and demand them from their doctors even though their problems aren’t caused by bacteria (AB’s are not OTC here, thank goodness). This has become such a problem here in NL that there’s a campaign going on warning people against overuse of AB’s. We’ve been seeing many cases lately of AB-resistant bacteria, these are now a real danger in hospitals and elderly care homes. Bacteria can become resistant to AB’s when a treatment isn’t performed under the right conditions. For instance: stopping a treatment too soon or using AB’s in the wrong cases.

There’s much attention on reducing the amounts of AB’s in both human and vetinarian medicine, as some of these resistant bacteria have developed on farms and have transfered to humans. This resistance problem is something that should be addressed would-wide, because we all travel and interact so much.

I didn’t necessarily want antibiotics. The doctor wasn’t really sure what I have. Could be a virus, could be something else. They did do a strep test and it was negative (I knew it would be). Anyway, I don’t have a fever and I don’t really have any other symptoms. Aside from the sore throat, I just have burning in my ears and a swollen gland on the right side of my neck. The doctor didn’t think I was contagious. Since I’ve gotten laryngitis really bad in the past, he said he was going to give me antibiotics just in case. They might help, they might not. I guess I’ll have to wait and see…

Agreed Ellie, but laryngitis, while an infection that can be ‘triggered’ by a virus, is actually still an infection that responds well to antibiotics. Basically the virus weakens our immune system, and the bacteria ever present in our throats, has a party. Same goes for tonsilitis.

I’m pretty sure when I had laryngitis for a month, it was due to a secondary infection. LOL But, at the time, I had to go to the university health center. They don’t like to give out antibiotics for anything. So by the time they finally give prescribe some, I think it was too late. I remember going to them and complaining like 3 times because I literally could not talk for a month. o_O

Saw John Wick Chapter 2 – enjoyed it as much as the first one. It’s so refreshing to see a great action flick that’s not drowning in its own CGI. It expanded on the cool underworld established in the first movie, AND Keanu gets to showcase his delayed one-liners in Italian!

I stopped watching the Oscars. Not only am I a firm believer that awards shows these days are a parade of narcissists, sycophants, bleeding hearts, and the PC police, but all too often the politically driven “results” overshadow films of true merit to a disgusting degree. Having said that, this year was unusually rich in remarkable movies. Lion was fantastic, imo, and I would have liked to see it win ten times over the pathetic choice of best film (the real one, not the ooops one).

Agreed Q8bunny. I also don’t follow any of the Hollywood personalities. It’s not on my list of hobbies… When I hear the PC speeches at the awards, it seems that film awards have given way to a platform to make a statement. I don’t like mixing the two. I appreciate good films, film commentary, film recognitions etc. If I wanted a political statement, I would turn to the news channels. Not the film awards. Aren’t films supposed to be an escape? The Oscars are sure not an escape anymore. Politics right in your face.

Oh I saw John Wick 2 too. I had not heard of John Wick 1… Not sure if it was my type of movie. He didn’t smile once. There was nothing positive. It was well done though, every guy I know who has seen it thought it was awesome. It looked like a video game to me. Headshots around every corner… shoot quick or be shot… just like a video game. I suppose there will have to be a John Wick 3 now that they ended it with even more despair…

I had wondered that… talk about a movie fan. Well, my black border collie is Arthur, from the tv series Merlin. My red merle border collie came with the name Rebel. Totally not my theme. My first 3 bunnies were named Merlin, Guinevere, and Morgana. After separating Morgana and one of her sons, I named him Avalon, and bonded them. Then I adopted Hop-a-Long for Guin, and renamed him Lancelot. All from the show Merlin.

The intent wasn’t there initially. Lots of one-two syllable names with consonant sounds were bounced around, but Wick seemed to fit the best! The November coincidence is completely fortuitous; I randomly looked it up one day out of curiosity.

On a different note -it’s February and I’ve been proclaiming it as Spring. My bf reminds me that March can still get snow around here. But we had such lovely weather the past 2 weeks, I’ve been itching to start planting bunny veggies. My flower garden is already starting to spruce up, the maple trees and plumaria have about finished flowering, and my bees have started bring pollen back to the hives. The weather guesser says one day of sub freezing for the next 10 days. But I am biting at my nails to start planting veggies 🙂 I’m going to start the cruciferous veggies this weekend, coz they can still handle a cold spell.

Vee: Nope. Pathetic is just right. Take equal measures of every ‘issue’ that can complicate life for a kid nowadays, stir in the bowl of a ‘disenfranchised’ American neighbourhood, season to taste with woe-is-me until utterly contrived, and wait for the critics o fall over themselves kissing derriere. Yuck. Plus! Time and time again: movies based on plays are poo, imo. Plus as much as I enjoyed La La Land, Lion or Hidden Figures would have been a far more deserving choice for Best Picture. But no golden statuettes for them; they didn’t stoop to melodrama, choosing to be empowering instead, and gods forbid that we make us commoners feel hopeful and inspired in today’s world – how would the powers that be control us then?!
