I  am starting to think my honey bunny is a bit of a fatty she has a dewlap and it seems to be getting bigger!! When she flops on the ground she looks lost in all her fur (she is a longhaired lop) she gets approx 1/3 cup pellets (which she takes a few days to eat) unlimited hay and maybe a sultana one every two days. I aslo feed her maybe 1 – 2 cups of veggies a day some days i dont have any so she misses out. She is very active and has a huge pen to play in all the time. But lately she just like to flop on a rug (as it is summer here and very hot). Does a dewlap mean a bunny is fat or is it genetic?? Please help should I be worried???

is she spayed yet? female rabbits will develop dewlaps as they reach sexual maturity. that is where pregnant buns wll pull fur from to make a nest. My bun started to get one before she was spayed at approx. 7 months. once she was spayed, it went away.

it doesn’t sound like she’s being overfed.

I agree about her diet – it sounds good! I’m surprised she takes so long to eat her pellets. Does she consume much of her hay? Also, what type of hay and pellets do you give?

In Australia, it is difficult to get pellets other than lucerne (alfalfa) based. You could cut her pellets even further if you wish. With hay, take care with grain hays such as oat or wheat as these can be fattening. Lucerne hay is really too rich and best for rabbits under 1 year of age, then they do better on other types of hay.

She certaily looks like a Honey Bunny!

Sounds healthy to me!! Take a couple pics and we can determine better, but her diet sounds GREAT!

Wait – her gobbler is going to go away now that we’ve had her spayed?

it’ll depend on how big it is… and also on the individual bun i think…

this is Mead one week after her spay.  the mini-dewlap that was growing went away completely within a month or two…  had i waited any longer, it might not have…

Okay. Meco is about two and she carries around a gigantic pillow under her face. I doubt that will ever melt away

What is in the cup of veggies? It should be mostly, if not all leafy greens. Anything sweet, such as banana, apple, carrot and so on could put weight on a bun.

a dewlap on a doe is nothing out of the ordinary. Does she carry weight anywhere else? Can you feel ribs when you pet her?
