I recently had my bunny spayed maybe almost a month ago. I did not notice any weight lost until maybe a week or week and a half ago. She used to be quite plump but now I can feel every single bone.

I have been feeding her a mixture of alfafa and timothy hay, and she eats and drinks normally. (always seems hungry).
She is about 10 month old dwarf hop.

I used to feed her pellets, but haven’t for maybe half a month? I’m ordering new ones currently.

My question is what should I do? Does the change in diet have such a major affect? Is it normal for post spayed bunnies to lose weight?

Should I wait for the pellets to arrive and feed her or should I take her to the vet asap?

Thanks. If anyone has any good vets in mind in the socal area, let me know. I’m not sure if my current one specializes in bunnies.

Sometimes the dewlap under the chin reduces after a spay but the weightloss you’re describing doesn’t sound right.

Check the House Rabbit Society vet listings if you haven’t already. Scroll to bottom of the page. http://www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

Does she eat lots of hay, more since she’s been off pellets or about the same amount? Dwarf breeds often experience dental problems so keep that in mind.

Pellets are definitely needed right now. They act like a vitamin. If you are only feeding hay, it isn’t enough. Pellets (a set amouunt) and veggies are needed in a rabbit’s diet. I’ve heard of rabbits on a pelletless diet, but lots of different types of veggies are needed to supplement going pelletless.

She needs to be seen by a vet- that is very alarming! And I would follow the vets recommendations on diet- but I suspect the vet will recommend immediately re-starting the old pellets to get her eating and her weight up. And then maybe consider switching over to a higher quality once her low weight is not an issue.

Thanks for the replies. I don’t want my bunny to waste away. Is there a master list of vegetables bunnies can eat?

I think she should see a vet. Pellets are an important part of diet especially for a younger bun. I would see a vet as soon as possible. Please keep us posted!!

Yes master list here THough I would really not recommend trying a bunch of new foods when your bunny is post spay and losing weight-I’d get some pellets from the store and feed the higher qauality when they arrive and in mean time see vet
