        Hi everyone-

I am a relativly new bunny mom and this may be nothing but I am freaking out.  I have had Samson for about 3 months now (hes 6mo) and have done 3 thorough health checks on him (cut his nails, feel his skin all over, check his teeth, made sure his eyes are clear, etc)  He recently has learned how to jump from the ground onto the bed which is next to his cage and about 4 ft off the ground.  I have since blocked this off because I think the drop is too big for his little body but when we were having our daily snuggle petting time today I noticed something in one of his eyes.

Upon closer look it looks like a piece of shedded skin?  I tried rubbing his eye for him but it doesnt seem to bother him.  I checked both eyes over again and now noticed that in both corners of his eyes (you have to push back the skin around his eyes) there is a little area of clearish skin.  Thus I am thinking this is where the piece of skin that is in his eye is from.

I am freaking out that this area of clearish/white skin in the corners of his eyes is abnormal.  I have never moved the fur away from the corners of his eyes always just looked at them to make sure they wernt cloudy/didnt have anything in them/etc…

Can other bunny moms take a look at the corners of your bunny eyes and tell me what it looks like?

        Thanks a million-

Rachel (aka paranoid bunny mommy of Samson)

          Hi Rachel.

Rabbits have a third eyelid which is clear so I’m thinking this is what you are seeing. Does it seem swollen or irritated?

It doesnt seem swollen, red or irratated.  And he actually doesnt mind me messing with his eyes so I dont think that they hurt him.  But there was a piece of skin on the surface of his eye that seems to be “floating around”.  It has moved off to the side now so maybe it will just come out on its own.  Should I be worried about that piece of ??skin?

I’ve had that with my rabbits too and like you’ve I tried to get it out but was not successful so I just left it and it eventually was gone. I would just leave it. You may irritate it if you keep messing with it. He does probably just think you are grooming him too when you are messing with his eyes.

You may also notice that your bunny’s third eyelids will move to cover more surface when you trim nails, if he’s under stress, or pet him near his eyes. Some bunnies do that just as a protection reaction. I also notice that Jack’s will sometimes do this when he is completely relaxed, like right before he falls asleep.

As far as on his eye, it’s probably just fresh sleep goo that will go to the corner of his eye, harden up and just become a sleepy that he’ll clean out, or that you can end up getting out later.

I find sleepies at the corners of Sammy’s eyes about 3 times a day. She always likes it when I get them off for her.

Getting the sleepies out of your bunny’s eyes is actually a great way to bond and build trust. They do it for each other when they have a bunny buddy – so whether human or bunny – it’s just the BFF thing to do.

Thanks for the replies everyone!!  Samson is doing GREAT and the eye problem that I thought he had was just as everyone said… nothing.  He’s about 6 months old now and quite spoiled!  I just started introducing veggies.  He loves lettuce, banana, strawberries, mint and dandelions. But he hates carrots.  Haha- silly bunny!
