        HI

JUST BOUGHT A BUNNY.  THE BUNNY (NO NAME YET) HAS A SMALL (APPROX. 1/10 INCH) CLOUDY SPOT ON HIS EYE.  THERE IS SOME WATERING.  I HAVE HAD SMALL ANIMALS BEFORE SUCH AS HAMSTERS AND KNOW THAT DUST CAN IRRITATE THE EYES.  AS FAR AS I KNOW DUST WOULD NOT CAUSE A CLOUDY EYE AND MY FIRST GUESS WOULD BE INFECTION.  ANY INFORMATION OR ADVISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I would strongly advise you to take your bun to a rabbit savvy vet for a thorough check up as soon as possible. Did you get this bunny from a pet store? I think a great many animals from pet stores unfortunately have health issues. Welcome to this site!  It’s a great resource with many knowledgeable people here. Let us know what happens.

hey jordan… welcome!  generally a weepy eye indicates an underlying health issue & your bunny should visit a rabbit savvy vet to get a checkup.  i do think that dusty hay can cause watery eyes too, so i usually leave the fine stuff in the hay bag & only pull out the big bits.  as for the cloudy spot… i assume it doesn’t move when your bunny blinks, in which case it’s probably from an eye trauma of some sort.  my dog has this actually and i’m takng him to an opthamologist (if you can believe it) so that they can check it out.  my vet would not have recommended this but i mentioned that my dog’s eye gets sore every so often (he squints & blinks a lot for about a day or so)and then it goes away.  she thinks this is an indication that there may be an issue – possibly something very small stuck under his lid there since the cloudy mark is in a line up & down.  i don’t know for certain if the same would apply to bunnys but it would make sense to me.  good luck & hope your bun is okay!

Hi Jordan and welcome, I third the suggestion to take your new bunny to the vet for an exam, the eye problem is a concern. It’s something we recommend you do with a new bunny anyway so your vet can build a repertoire with your bunny and get to know them. It is a good start to a regular annual visit. : ) What kind of bedding did/does the bunny live in? If it is pine or cedar shavings, consider something bunny-safe like Care Fresh and if not already, litterbox train and use Yesterday’s News, Care Fresh or Aspen Supreme. What kind of home is your bunny living in?

Of course the vet is he first and only option.  I was wondering if this is a bad sign?  Do i have a defective bunny?  He is super cute and i want him to be healthy.  I feel like I reasearched bunnys well before i bought.  I got the care fresh, timothy, and everything else i read about.  Currently unnamed bunny lives in a wire  with plastic bottom cage wiTch is big considering his size (DWARF).  He is eating and drinking well and does not seem lethargic.

Unnamed bunny is brown with blue undertones and short ears.  I"m not sure of the exact breed as all i cared about was providing cute bunny with good home.

Hello Jordan – welcome to Binky Bunny!

Can you tell if the cloudy spot in his eye is moving around? Or is it in one spot? A couple days ago one of my bunnies just got a bit of mucous or something in his eye (similar to us getting an eyelash in our eye) – and I just dabbed it quick with a q-tip to help him get it out of his eye. Of course, if it looks like the cloudy spot is just on the eye itself and not moving around this will not work.

Don’t worry though – you don’t have a defective bunny (there are no defective bunnies!) – I have a bunny named Grace that was born with only one eye, and the other eye is a bit cloudy, and she can’t see out of it. The vet previously told me that it looked like her eye had been injured, so it could also be that your new bunny’s eye got injured. Even if your bunny can’t see out of that eye (or both eyes for that matter!) it can still have a perfectly healthy, happy life. Grace is one of my sweetest bunnies, and the smartest about responding to her name.

I’ll look again and see if it moves around.  I’m trying to not bother the bunny until the newness is gone.  I just hope this is nothing serious.  I had a hampster once that got an infection in his check pouch that would not go away.  I could have bought 300 hampsters for what i spent in vet bills.  Of course he was 3 yoa and based on hampters life spans he must have been equal to 150 in people years.

Welcome Jordan. It sounds like you are gonna be a great bunny owner. You are getting off to a good start by coming to Binky Bunny

My advice when it comes to rabbits is: if concerned or in doubt, it’s better to be safe that sorry and see a vet because rabbits are as fragile as they are cute.

Let us know how your bunny is doing.

Well the redness and watering went away on its own.  White spot is still there however, I called the person I got him from and they said that several weeks after he was born he was scratched by a brother of a sister and that he was treated then.  Still going to go to the vet though.  Thanks everyone for your responses.

I know spots on animals eyes can be something to be concerned about so I’m glad you are taking him in. I recently helped with a large rescue and one of the buns had an eye injury from who knows what and the person who had the rabbits just let it go – it looked really bad – still does even after the intensive drops that my vet described and he is probably pretty much blind in that eye – he doesn’t know it but he is. There are also spots that appear on animals (I’m thinking birds) that indicate disease – don’t ask me what it is, because I cannot think of it right off though. Let us know what the vet says.
