So Bombur has been getting this crusty patch on his eye for a while now. It’s never goopy feeling or wet, but as you can see it looks almost like a pimple. I pick it off whenever it starts to scab like this and give it a good clean. I’m not sure what it is, so any thoughts are welcome. I know teeth could be a reason, and the vet was concerned with some overgrowth of his back teeth a year ago, but at his physical in July she said he was in the clear. He also has vision loss from his EC, so I’m not sure if this is tied into it or not, but it’s always a possibility with him.

The boys have their semi-annuals on the 19th, so we’ll be seeing the vet anyways. But just wanted some thoughts before I go in.

Is there a way to get a CT done? It could show where an infection is and where it’s coming from. I’m either thinking a molar or other tooth is causing an issue some pore right there keeps getting clogged. How long has it been there? And any new allergens in the house?

It could be tied to the EC. He has cataracts from EC, correct?

BH: He’s eating completely fine and never shows signs of pain or drooling or any typical dental symptoms, so it makes me think it’s more related to his EC than to anything else. My vet will not do imagining unless it seems 100% necessary, both because he stresses super easily and because she knows monetary constraints are tight. But even with her assessment of the photo she doesn’t think it’s super serious.

LBJ: We’re not sure if he has cataracts or not? The vet did say he has vision loss at his last EC check-up. But I think this time she’s planning to do a more thorough eye exam.

Eye problems like glaucoma and cataracts can cause the eyes to run. That’s why I asked. Hopefully the vet can get a better look.

I didn’t know that! Thanks for letting me know! Honestly with Bombur any piece of information is so critical to his care.

Did your vet do a test with fluorescein eye drops? That can show if the drainage duct is working okay or not. The appears at the nose if there is flow through the duct. Although, I expect it would be more goopy if that was the case…

It could be mild skin infection perhaps.

My other thought is atypical syphilis (treponematosis), a bacterial infection. Like EC, it can be something rabbits carry all their life and never display symptoms or it presents itself when a rabbit is aging or immunocompromised.

No, she’s never done anything more than basic tests on his eyes and teeth. I’ll definitely mention it to her though. Bombur certainly is immunocompromised, so that wouldn’t surprise me either. Thanks for the suggestions. A week to go and we’ll see!

Late to this thread. Any news? BB might not work again for another few weeks, so I’ll keep an eye on your Insta just in case. (((Bombur))) Heaps of noserubs for your cuddlebear.

Thanks Q8! Back from the glorious three-day weekend, and of course their semiannual xD

Apparently Bombur has an extra large sleep gland. Like I guess in a bunny they’re fairly large anyways, but the vet said Bombur’s is larger than most, so it tends to over-excrete. He’s (almost) healthy otherwise! He has a slight point on his premolar and first molar, but she said she doesn’t anticipate needing to file them down. So that’s good news!

How unusual. Glad he’s otherwise well. ☺️
