eye infection or injury

well Bun was finally recovering from his humping problem… now today I get home from shopping all day and Buns eye looks red around the rim and has some discharge, looks clear not yellow but this is new. at first I thought he got hit in the eye by a piece of glass cuz my daughter dropped a glass, but I’m sure it would be bleeding and I see nothing stuck in there. obviously tomorrow we must see the very but for now , can I use Bausch & Laomb eye wash for him? I know it’s fine for hamsters but not sure for bunnies. also any other advice wood be great. thank you!

If it is a saline solution, then yes it is safe Hope his eye gets better! Definitely get a vet to check it out, as eye problems can get scary.

Oh no – I think as long as it’s sterile and has not been used it should be fine as a temporary fix – I think it may soothe his eye a bit. However if it’s just red and he’s not all squint eyed I’m not sure if it’s totally necessary. And it would need to be an unopened uncontaminated bottle – I think if it’s safe for hamsters and humans, it’s fine for rabbits in a fix.

We have a history of eye problems in our household.  When we got our kitten, Zoey, 2 of the cats ended up w/ scratched corneas.  Our rabbit, Tobey, somehow also got a scratched cornea, likely not due to Zoey, that ended up leading to a corneal ulcer.  Sometimes eyes can get irritated from hay or having to duck their heads to tightly in a pellet bowl.  However, if it doesn’t go away after considering these things, I would get it checked out.  Eye scratches can lead to major infections that cost a great deal of money to treat.  Tobey saw a vet opthamalogist specialist for almost 5 mos to recover.  Get it checked out!

Thanks for all your replies! I went to the pharmacy last night and got the Rite Aid version of Bausch & Lomb eye wash- it’s made of 99.05% purified water, boric acid (the active ingredient), sodium borate and sodium chloride. I really rinsed his eye well when we were giving Bun his oral Baytril last night. Before I went to sleep, it looked awful, really red and some white discharge. Then this morning, I couldn;t tell which eye it was at first, it looked so good. No more redness and it was wide open. So- and maybe this was a mistake – I gave him another few drops when he got his Baytril at about 8 AM. A few hours later and now, it looks squinty and watery. No more redness or discharge, but not bright and wide open like before. He also hasn’t gobbled down all his greens, but this is his sleepy time. And he just ate papaya bits like his usual greedy self lol. I know that when the kids have hurt their eyes in their various fights and accidents, they were squinty and couldn’t look into the light for a couple days. But eye injuries heal very quickly IF they don’t get infected. I’m gonna call my local vet (the one that p$ssed me off last time by not doing any diagnostics on Bun for his humping issue). Maybe he will give me some antibiotic ointment if I beg- after all, I just dropped $150 recently for NOTHING- hd to diagnose Bun as having a UTI myself and give him Baytril that I had already >.< .

Does anyone know what antibiotic eye ointments are good for bunnies? I don;t entirely trust this vet not to give me sonething toxic to rabbits- unfortunately the other vet is 1 hour away and I have no reliable vehicle today. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere in 80+ degree weather with Bun would possibly have a worse outcome than an eye injury.

I’m pretty sure you can use Polysporene for eyes for bunnies.

I would just call the vet and see what he recommends.

Well they make baytril drops for the eyes and I know LoveChaCha has used them for ChaCha and had good results with those but it is going to depend on what the problem truly is I would suppose.

I’m trying to remember what Noot was given when he had a scratched cornea…I don’t think I have it anymore either. I’ll try to remember…maybe I posted it here…

You may be able to just phone the vet and ask for a cream/drops to try without bringing him in. With Noot they diagnosed the scratch by using a certain kind of drop and then a special light.

Thanks for all ur replies . I’m sorry I didn’t reply sooner but it’s been crazy around here. My mum is doing well so I’m trying to spend time with her and my son is off to college soon, which involves lots of preparation.
anyway, I got lucky with Buns eye. it just got better with no further intervention! by wednesday night it was fine. he must have gotten poked in his eye as he was rooting through his hay. he has a new trick where he gets up onto the box where I keep the hay and actually gets himself into the hay bag lol. it’s cute but I’m remembering when he got into the hay storage box and how adorable that was until I discovered he had peed all in the hay.

Good to hear Bun is doing okay. I’ve had mine get hay in eyes AND ears and it’s difficult to get them well again. Can’t tell you how annoying hay is in general for me and how much I wish bunnies ate something sensible…like chocolate! >_<
I have special creams and drops for Mimzy’s eyes as he was always getting infections in them. One is loaded with a steroid and my vet only wants me using it in the most dire of circumstances. But the other is just a neo-polycin (neomycin/polymyxin b sulfates/bacitracin zinc) and then she tells me I can use a plain visine tears (no redness relief or allergy) twice a day.
He’s had more trouble with discharge since his tilt because the one eye always faces the floor but it’s much better than it was at the onset back in June.
