Eye Discharge?

Okay. This post actually isn’t about either of my bunnies this time! (Thank God)

My friend has two bunnies. Each are about four, maybe five months old. Male and female. Probably came from the same litter. Pet store bought. (Grr..)

She recently moved down to Orlando with them, and noticed that they both had been sneezing. Not a LOT. But enough to be noticed. And consistantly. I suggested that it may be just from the dust from moving in, or perhaps an allergen in the air -we have a BUTTLOAD of allergens down here in Florida right now. I mean it’s BAD right now. I asked her if there was any discharge comming from their noses and she said no.

Well, she took the boy, Obli, to be neutered yesterday. (By a very bunny-savvy vet, thank God.) The surgery went well and all, but he didn’t want to eat when he got home and was a bit lethargic. This strikes me as a bit odd because, from what I’ve had explained to me, neuters usually come home ‘hungry’ and want to be feisty jumpy bunnies? But I don’t know. I’ve never had males before. =s

After a while, she noticed that there was some thick, white discharge coming from one eye. ‘About the size of your mouse pointer’, as she described it to me. She wiped it away, but had to go to school.

And that’s where the issue is now. I won’t be able to find out anymore about it until she gets home 1 1/2 hours from now. But I’ll keep you guys posted.

Could this be pasteurella? Aggrovated by the stress of the neuter?

Usually when animals are put under anesthesia they have an eye lube ointment applied to their eyes to protect their eyes (keeps the eyes moist, and the pets can not blink while under anesthesia).  So sometimes the eye area can be a little greasy looking after surgery.  I would have her call her vet and ask what they think.  But just a one time thing post-surgery does not sound too scary.  But her vet would have the best feedback since they JUST saw the bunny.

Thanks for that, KatnipCrzy!  I have cared for dozens of bunnies post spay/neuter, and I always wondered why their faces were wet and goopy under their eyes.  I always thought it was some reaction to the surgery, I did not know that it was intentional and part of the care.

Oh hay! Thanks from me too. I didn’t know that and was also wondering that! I just always kind of figured it was from a combination of having that isofluorine thing over their heads and possibly hangover-y dischargeness.

Anyway, about my friend’s bunny. She says that the ‘goop’ she found on her boy’s eye was like, 70% clear and maybe 30% white. Does that sound like the gauze?

oh yeah. i do remember Mead’s eyes being weird looking post-spay. i wonder if that’s it…

HUH!! WOW I totally thought the same thing osprey!! I was actually really upset by Kahlua’s moist eyes, I thought things had been much more invasive and painful then I’d anticipated (soooo she probably wasn’t very impressed with the uber-close monitoring and ‘just in case’ critical care lol)
