I’ve had Otto for a few days now and I’ve noticed that he gets crusties in his eyes in the morning. On Saturday I tried to wipe them away with a damp papertowel, but he wasn’t having it and I didn’t want to force it. By the end of the day he seemed to have cleaned them up on his own. The vet said he’s perfectly healthy and the crusties don’t look bad to me, just like the crusties most animals (assuming people) seem to get. So should I just leave it alone? Is this common?

Also, I found quite a bit of uneaten cecals yesterday (I could’ve done without him stepping in them ). I know this is normal for a young bun, but should I take some in to the vet with the regular poo sample they requested? Or is regular poo enough for their testing?

Crusties seem pretty normal for my rabbits.

I don’t think a fecal float is ever a bad idea for a new rabbit – I recommend you do one. I think you can just take a regular fecal in for them to test – not the cecal but the fecal.

Just want to add that Samantha wakes up with little crusties every morning, and patiently lets me pluck or wipe them off of her with my fingers. She even lets me do it after her naps if they form again. And she is one feisty bunny about being handled. She really likes my grooming her eyes.

Cotton gets little crumbs of “sleep” in her eyes daily.  When she was a baby she used to hate me gently wiping them away- then I think she came to regard it as grooming- so I will lick me finger to “groom” her eye and she seems to enjoy that.    The weird things we will do for our buns.  Schroeder never seems to have any eye crusties.

Owen gets crusties too, and generally lets me pluck them off.

                    I’ll quadruple ditto, crusties are normal… :o)

Now if there is more than a “little bit”, it’s happening more frequently, or the whole eye is getting crusty or wet, that is something to discuss with the doctor as it might be an infection.

Nowadays, it’s rare for me to have to clean them off either of my buns b/c they groom them off each other. Occassionally I might be petting one and look down and see something and wipe it away…

Pepper often has teenytiny crusties at the corner of her eyes and lets me pick them off when I’m petting her

My non-bonded bunnies get crusties too – usually they get angry if the crusty is really stuck on there and I have to pluck it off, but for the most part they don’t mind when I get it out.

Did you take the bunny poop to the vet to get tested? Did anything come back abnormal?
