Well, his eye was looking pretty good. Then I came home today and it was all bloody. He had JUST scratched it right before I got there. In case you all don’t remember, this is his third eyelid. The vet gave me this gel to put in it to keep it from getting infected but said there wasn’t much else we could do. How do I keep him from scratching it!?!?! Every time it starts looking good, he does that and we have to start all over again.

I can’t put a cone collar on him, I don’t think. The vet acted like he would freak out if I put one on him. I don’t think he would, but I would be afraid of him jumping around in his multi-level cage and smacking into something and hurting himself. Also, I don’t know where I would find one that small.

Did some reading and it said that those collars are not recommended. I figured as much. I honestly don’t know what to do to keep him from scratching it. Has anyone had this problem before? I can take a picture of his eye if you guys would like so you can see what I am talking about. The third eyelid (membrane) is swollen up again from him scratching it last night. It’s not bleeding anymore though.

Could you put a sock on his front paws, so that is unable to scratch? You could get a baby sock. Well, or simply socks for small dogs.

How about socks like these? Stay-put socks for dogs.

Hmm, I wonder if a baby sock would stay on. He has such tiny little feet since he only weighs 2lbs. What are these dog sock things? I have never heard of them before. It looks like they have some “herbal” ingredients, are those safe for rabbits?

While a collar isn’t ideal, it might be necessary so the eye can get past this stage and finally heal. They are used with bunnies who are chewing at surgery sutures sometimes. If you had to use a collar, could he be moved into a pen so he wouldn’t need to jump levels, just during the healing time?

Oh, I just googled socks for dogs. From what I skimmed-read, it was for dogs with skin problems on their feet, so first you had to put a certain creme on and then the sock, so I don’t think the socks had ingredients, but I may be mistaken. It was just an example of socks for dogs.

Hmm, perhaps some bandage on his front paws then? I think it is more of a concern that he scratches his eye so badly than him being uncomfortable with a bandage on his front paws.

Yeah, they have ingredients in them. I just didn’t know if they were safe. Also, I think it is his back foot that he is using to scratch it. I don’t know if it matters, but I think he is intentionally scratching it as opposed to grooming himself and accidentally scratching himself. The vet said it probably gets itchy as it starts to heal.

We don’t have an exercise pen since they have run of an entire room when somone is home and are corraled by a baby gate. Maybe I could have my husband remove the levels from his cage. Do you know where to find a collar that is small enough? I looked at the ones at Petsmart and the smallest size still seemed huge.

I would contact your vet and see if they can modify one for him. Or see if the vet can get smaller ones.

Okay, I will call the vet and see what they say. Like I said, the vet didn’t seem to enthusiastic about the idea when I brought it up during our visit. Perhaps they haven’t had very good luck using them on rabbits.

Collars aren’t great for bunnies, but if the the vet doesn’t like that idea, he/she needs to be able to offer an alternative that will protect the eye from further injury. I wonder if bunnies can use some type of eye patch…
