› Forum › THE LOUNGE › Extermely off topic, 80s hair?
Hey guys im getting ready for an non formal dance at my school. All the seniors are doing an 80s theme to upstage/impress the under classmen lol. Its a tradition for the first dance. Anyways i have my outfit together but my hair is a mystery lol, i told you this was off topic! I looked online but i cant find anything that looks..normal lol. Anyone from the 80s? how do i tease hair and make that poofy lol. I only have about an hour. Sorry if i wasted your time guys lol lol
Well… 80s hair doesn’t look normal… it’s looks like 80s hair!!!! Do you have bangs?? If you do then a classic 80s thing was to split your bangs in half length-wise and curl the top half up and then back and then curl the bottom half down so that they kinda look like an oval sitting on the top of your forehead… not quite sure why we decided that looked attractive… gosh I feel old now!!! I think the main requirements are a curling iron and ALOT of hairspray… good luck!
no bangs.. just long straight brown hair.
Thanks for the response though, i was feelin kinda crazy for asking such a random question lol
You have an hour…you waited till NOW?!
Umm, well, I’m really a child of the 90’s, but had a terrible gradeschool life in the 80’s… so here’s as much as I know.
Bangs. Must have bangs! If you don’t have bangs, well, I’m not sure. If you do have something vaguely resembling bangs, you curl your bangs, hairspray the snot out of them with something toxic like Aquanet, and then back-brush for the tumble-weed look. Big and wavy was in, as far as I remember.
Also, crimping irons were much in vogue.
Here, found this for you. 80’s sitcom called Saved by the Bell.
Have fun being social, little introvert!
Long straight hair, huh? You can still do it…fattie curling iron and LOTS of hairspray!
Bob the Bunny, some of my most embarrasing pictures are from 7th or 8th grade with the exact bangs you’re describing! I’d go burn them right now, but I think they’re all at my parents’ house!
Yuck!
lol thanks, its fun when someone knows you from a past thread, but im sure your used to that.
that kinda what i was looking for, i loved that show lol
Im goona try that ^^ but im not good at this lol
Am I the queen of useless internet crap, or what?!
Just found you this…see if it helps.
http://www.liketotally80s.com/1980s-hairstyles.html
I have to admit… if you had 3 hrs left you’d have a better chance… it can take a while to get that much hairspray into your hair!!!! Just use a ton of hairspray and get your hair as “BIG” as you can get it!!!!
O Yuck! overwhelming amount of hair spray!
Yeah, maybe put Hammer in another room…
And a gas-mask wouldn’t be amiss, either.
I remember my mom used to help me do my hair. She’d put her hand over my eyes, and then say, “Ok, hold your breath…1…2…3” *Spray*!!!
I’d come up sputtering.
God forbid it RAIN on that mess!
No wonder the 90’s were what they were! I am no longer apologetic for my lank hair and flannel of the 90s! After the 80’s, we all deserved a break from CARING!
Hammer is in a different room. Sadly i cant hold my breath that long
ok guys i suck at this.. a little side part and some body is all thats takin to my straight hair lol o well
O my goodness i sprayed by eye lol
I got a suitable body with a side part and sweep to the side thing
i tried to take pics but they didnt do me justice so nevermind lol, ill just be fashionably late lol
You aren’t a true 80’s girl without hairspray in your eye! Sounds like you’re doing ok!
Have fun!
Sounds great! Have fun!
Ah me! This brings back memories! lolz… I went from having those darned bi-levels, to crimping, to the Madonna look (her “Like A Virgin” days) and BLEACH BLEACH BLEACH! I gave myself an inner ear flu from bleaching so much that the peroxide killed all the good bacteria in my ear! And I tore all my sweatshirts so they’d look like Flashdance clothing! Legwarmers are a must!
I can’t offer any more than already has been done, but I hope you have a good time! Be sure to have the band play some Winger for MimzMum! ^_^
LOL Have FUN!!! And you must post piccies!!
Oh, man, you know you are old when the decade you grew up in is part of a costume party thing.
I had the whole feathered poofy hair deal in 1981 – 1983. Feathered so much so that both sides feathered and they met in the back!! Gack! And then in my senior year 1985, I advanced to the more modern look, less poof, but heavy bangs, partial feather on sides with the curl inward by my shoulders. So hip!!! LOL
It may be difficult to achieve the feathered look without the crazy layers, but you could also try a banana clip – don’t know if they even have those anymore? Or wear your hair in a ponytail on the side of your head.
I actually saved my teen magazines from the 80’s. If I have time tomorrow, I’ll dig one out, scan some of the pics in and that should give you some great ideas.
For now, you can bask in the beauty of my senior picture. HAHAHA! Egads it’s goofy! Notice the heavy bangs – big ‘ol curled under bangs.
lovely pic BB! send some pics of you let us see the hair hehe
BB! You brave, brave woman for posting your 80’s pic! Hate to tell you but I think BunnyLiz’s dance has been & gone now but I’d love to see 80’s hair pics for a laugh. Ha ha, I’d forgotten that feathering-meet-in-the-back look! Oh and that split bangs with the curl on top!!! Actually that look only filtered through to Australia and rural areas by the early 90’s. I was prepubescent in the height of 80’s fashions so my photographs depict gawkyness+80’s chic wannabe!
The mullet look keeps making reappearances here. Don’t know if you use the term Mullet in the US. It’s hairdo with short hair around face and front and long hair at the back. Often described as “business in the front, party at the back”! Just think Billy Ray Cyrus when he was really big!
Thanks for sharing your pic BB lol. I went for the saved by the bell thing above but sadly by the time i got dressed and ready it fell flat lol. O well i tried right? i didnt get any pictures of when it did actually look similar to what i wanted : ( I have a few pics i can post but they arent very good.. and after a few min. of dancing i put my hair up in a side pony tail with a ribbon and was done lol. The dancing did not exactly help it, plus i dont have layers. So heres the pics, dont laugh at my outfit lol, it was just all that was in my closet, and not really the best 80s get-up.
Ahh.. i tried to fix the red eye but it didnt work.. im in the royal blue sweatshirt on the left in the pics

1920243470654.jpg
Not bad!
Awesome! Side ponytails are fine! You look hot, sister! Glad you had fun!
I agree Binky Bunny! It is sad that it’s a big joke now, when we grew up!!! I was just a kid in the 80’s (born in 82) but I remember all the crazy stuff! I love watching old tv shows now set in that time and laughing at how stupid everyone looks (my fave: Married with Children!!!!))
Yeah, what gets me is when the K-Tel type commercials come up on the t.v. and radio for “oldies” and it’s the music you spent most of your school years dancing to! 0_o
I wish I knew where my yearbooks had gone to, I have photos like yours BB! ^_^
Agh! I should’ve thought about the headbands! those were big too! ^_^ Nice piccies Liz!
Okay, I’m going to go sit back in my rocking chair and take my Geritol and have a snooze now. xD
Another admission: I had leg warmers. I also have my freshman picture that’s REAALLY goofy – Huge hair! It almost takes up the whole school photo. I’ll have to scan it in. Wlll try. It’s really funny.
But ya know, I have really noticed the 80’s styles coming back as a trendy thing. I am frightened I tell you!!!!
Lol yea i think its coming back a little. My step mom still wears her hair kinda big lol. I looked for legwarmers at the store but there werent any. And when i asked people looked at me really funny lol
That’s so funny. My friends and I are throwing an 80’s party next weekend. I was born in 84, so I didn’t get to fully experience the 80’s… Sadly. The great thing is that so much of the 80’s style is back, so I’ve put to together a pretty fabulous 80’s punk/Madonna look straight out of my closet. I just need to find some fishnet fingerless glove to really glam it up. Unfortunately I haven’t had heavily layered hair or bangs since the very very early 90’s, so I can’t quite get the hair to fabulous heights…
and I still use Rave.
Rave? like ‘party’ or ‘dance’? lol
Oh my sweet dear… Rave like hairspray. haha
lol lol o ok
lol my mom uses that! sorry if that makes you feel old lol
0_o They still make RAVE?? Whoa, now THAT’S a step back!
Amazing how words change over time too, to mean different things. Confusing. >.< I am sure I must be putting my foot squarely in my mouth these days since I get so many strange looks from people due to my phraseology. Ah well, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? xD
Oh it does not. I’m only 24. I’m still just a bunny
Oh of course they still make Rave. My mom was a beautician and I always remember when Prom and homecoming came around she would stock up on the AquaNet. Haha
lol i use aquanet for prom and homecoming too!
I had leg warmers in yr 12 Only that was 4 years ago, and I lived in the tropics. My friends and I decided that we would have ‘Random Day’ every Friday, where we wore really odd things to school and took a million photos. The end result was about 300 photos of us wearning really wierd stuff, that our kids will one day find and think thats what fashion looked like 10 years ago (ie 2000-2005).
We were of course the only 3 people in our school doing that so we were obviously jut a little odd to begin with Fond memories!
Men had some awesome ‘dos in the 80s too. Check out any video of Duran Duran (they were the height of cool in my crowd), Flock of Seagulls, heh, even Devo with flower pots and/or plastic Reagan hair on their heads. Good times!
Ospery, you can now impress the young ‘uns with your knowledge of Duran Duran! They’ve made somewhat of a comeback!
Osprey’s post reminded me of something, does anyone (old enough) here remember a band from the 80’s called Go West? I would swear that today’s John Mayer sounds like their lead singer!
Oh boy…Duran Duran. Is “Bon…Simon Le Bon” still their lead?
I was shocked a few years ago when Robert Palmer died. I can still remember the band he formed with John Taylor from DD. What were they called again? (“Some Like It Hot” was one of their big singles.)
A-Ha (“Take on Me”) and The Stray Cats also had awesome 80s hair.
I LOVED those songs! They are classics!
(Granted, I was only 12 at the time, but who cares!? I appreciate them more now…)
They do ’90’s weekends on my local Los Angeles radio stations, and I get all excited. I graduated high school in ’94. Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails and Guns And Roses. Who knew it’d be “retro” in some sense, now?! (And that I’d be answering ’80’s hair questions, which I’m channeling from a time when I was 8 YEARS OLD!).
((Metallica’s new record is totally poser and lame, btw. PUHH-LEASEE!!! )
Ack…. My high school students, when asked, “Who was Kurt Cobain?”, reply, “HUH?!”
Sad.
I’m not a huge ’80s music fan. More 70’s 90’s and some nowsies, but I did like A-HA and thought the lead singer way pretty cute – oh dear!
Which one was the lead-singer, JerseyGirl?
(Lizzy has voiced her disapproval of the entire topic by trying to eat my laptop, btw!)
The one to the left is the lead singer. I loved Aha – especially the song “Take on me” It reminds me of my first love. Memory Lane….ack….reality…I’m old.
The one on the left I think. I only ever knew there one song! lol One hit wonders – wish some of the fashions were one hit wonders but sadly there back and haunting me- gahhhh!
No, no, no! I loved that song too! Never too old for good music!
(That middle guy looks like the Russian ballet dancer…crud, I don’t remember his name!…was on Sex and the City as Carrie’s BF for awhile…before he got incredibly lame and Mr Big had to save the day…(still have the see the movie–don’t tell me what happens!))
Lightchick – I think you are thinking of Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Here’s a pic of an older Mikhail, but you’re right he does look similar the A-Ha member (middle pic)!
Found this and tho I’m really a child of the 90s I knew everything and STILL can’t get that damn Bon Jovi song out of my head.
